With a high enough resolution, being able to natively display low-res content becomes moot point. Simple example, a 3840x2400 display can perfectly display both 640x480 and 800x600 via nearest neighbor "pixel doubling" Then for resolutions that don't mathematically match up perfectly, such as 800x600 on 2560x1440, you would do nearest-neighbor pixel doubling to the closest resolution that's larger than the panel's native resolution (in this case 2400x1800), and then do a simple bilinear or bicubic DOWNscale to the panel's native resolution.

However, for non-pixel based content, this would be sub-optimal and would just result in aliasing. For those it would be best to just use a very high-quality upscaling algorithm, i.e. stuff like PhotoZoom Pro's "S-Spline Max". Currently such scaling algorithms are limited to offline rendering, but in theory dedicated scaling hardware could implement such algorithms in the future, especially considering that PhotoZoom Pro already supports GPU acceleration.


Honestly, the biggest issue is that neither the nearest neighbor nor the S-Spline Max method work best for all situations - nearest neighbor is best for pixel art and sprite-based content where you want to retain pixel clarity and sharpness, while S-Spline Max is best for when you want to eliminate aliasing and pixelation without ending up with a blurry mess or with tons of sharpening artifacts. The best solution I can think of would be the ability to choose between either scaling solution depending on the program via the current GPU application profiles (with the default set to nearest neighbor as that's more situation-neutral and is what you'd want for most GUIs)

Example case situations - Nearest Neighbor would be best for the original side-scrolling Duke Nukem while S-Spline Max would best for Riven.
