Good graphics card for ~$500

Thread Starter
I am much over due for graphics card upgrade as I am running an ATI all-in-wonder HD.

I have been looking at the HD7070 Lightning (Newegg).
Or
Sapphire Vapor-X (Newegg)

I just want to know if that is still a safe bet or if there is something else out there. I am looking to play games along the lines of BF3, Metro 2033, Company of Heros 2. I probably won't be overclocking much.

Budget is ~$500

Thanks!

Get 2 x GTX 760's

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130938

$250 each, so exactly on budget. And would perform great in those games.

I would have to get a new mobo, My board is microatx and only has one x16. Furthermore, My psu is only 600w.

Now I am tempted to get them though....

What about single-card solutions?

Won't last for very long with 2GB of VRAM. rolleyes.gif

Get a 7970.

Should I just put down the extra 20 bucks and get the Vapor-x with twice the ram? The lightning seems more like an overclocker's card.

I'd go for the Lightning, you wouldn't be able to use up all 6GBs of VRAM anyways, enjoy your card! thumb.gif

I wouldn't there's no real way you'll be using 6GB of VRAM unless you have like a tri-monitor setup, along with a few of those in crossfire.

You don't need a Lightning either, I've heard they're overpriced for what you actually get. I'd recommend a Sapphire Vapor-X, ASUS DCU2 (this depends though, if you're alright dealing with ASUS' crappy support if a problem arises) or a Gigabyte Windforce 3. Those are all good cards, but the ASUS card costs a fair amount: $480 in Canada.

OP you don't need 6GB unless you are running triple 1440p monitors and 2 -3 cards in CF. for single monitor a HD 7970 3GB is enough. the ASUS MATRIX HD 7970 Platinum and MSI HD 7970 Lightning boost are both good options. in terms of cooling the ASUS card is better. the msi hd 7970 lightning boost has 1150 mhz compared to 1100 mhz on matrix platinum out of the box. few people have found asus tweak to be cumbersome and not as good as msi afterburner for overclocking. pick one of these 2 cards.

So the 6GB Vapor-X is out. I guess its down to the Lightning or the windforce. Does anyone else believe the Lightning does not justify its price? Any other recommendations?

Get a cheaper 7970 for $330ish, then use the extra money to get a better mobo and or psu that will support crossfire later on. And while youre at it, your sig rig says "stock cooling". Umm i'd fix that asap.
