Unless they are underrating the speed of the memory subsystems. In that case it would only requiere a firmware update to reflect the multiplier update.

I don't think we talk about the same thing, look at the post I was commenting. (quote was stripped-down too much it seems)

Besides, why would they underrate a memory clockspeed? - that's all determined in pre-production state.
The only case we've seen of clocks increase through update is on the Wii U and that's because they decided to get more performance at a cost of power consumption, that's not something significant when it comes to memory.

It was just a wild guess. Memory ICs are often underrated to what they are really capable of just because of JEDEC compliance.

It already matched it... You just happen to not know what you're talking about. The 2133Mhz DDR3 @ 256-bit gave 68GB/s combined with the previous ESRAM estimate of 102.4GB/s. The developers had roughly 170GB/s of bandwidth to allocate.

It being split doesn't negate the fact that you can R/W to each pool of memory. The only limitation is that the ESRAM was exclusive to the GPU/can't be accessed by the CPU. However, the GPU can R/W to either pool of memory.

Obviously the sustained bandwidth is going to be lower, just as it is with any memory controller.

There may arise scenarios where the X1 will outperform the PS4 where memory performance in concerned. Remember, the PS4 has 32 ROPs that will ever only have access to a PORTION of the 176GB/s. The X1 has 16 ROPs with potentially 192GB/s of bandwdith. The Tahiti XT(7970), which also features 32 ROPs has significantly higher bandwidth and is never ROP-limited because of it. Another example is the GK104 with 32 ROPs and is often bandwidth-limited because of it. The 4GB GTX 680 almost never outperforms it's 2GB brethren... and often loses to the 7970 at higher resolutions.

Funnily enough, we saw more X1 games at 1080/60fps than we did PS4 games at E3.

You mean we saw more xb1 games at 60 fps on slied win 7 pcs..... ps4 actually used dev kits.

Nah, as the system ages they can optimize the other stuff to not take up so much RAM, the PS3 did that.

It will now, and some games will sacrifice it as we're now really starting to see the effects of diminishing returns.
