Question on Change in RAM timings

Thread Starter
My default ram timings for XMS Dominators are 4-4-4-12. After overclocking my E6600 from 2.4ghz to 3.4 ghz, the RAM timings automatically changed to 5-5-5-18. Is it OK if I change them back to CAS 4 or do i have to leave them at 5-5-5-18.

If I switch RAM timings manually back to default CAS4 will it create any problems or is it OK.

Try to lower the timing and then test with memtest86 (test 5) to make sure that is it stable. Also, it would be helpful to know the stock speed of your dominators to know roughly how well they can run.

sounds like you have your ram in auto so if you watn to change that setting to manual then set your ram at 4-4-4-12 or whatever and put it 1:1 and you should be ok

Your RAM has EPP which adjusts your timings based on clock speed. Corsair includes it to help simplify overclocking. You still maybe able to tighten your timings though. Try dropping each value by one and run a few hours of MemTest86+. CAS is the most important of the timings. tRAS must be at least CAS + tRCD + 1.

I used to have the same RAM. It defaulted to 5-5-5-18 for me as well on my motherboard. DuckieHo is right, the EPP will set your RAM to looser timings than they are rated at.

When I noticed this on my RAM, I changed it in the BIOS to 4-4-4-12 and used a 1:1 ratio and had no problems, so my guess is you won't either. However the memtest is a good idea. I don't know if you need to run it hours on end though. 1 pass is sufficient, 2 passes if you want to be anal about it.

So just drop it to 4-4-4-12 and run memtest for probably 30-45min. That should get you through 1 maybe 2 passes. If it won't pass memtest at stock timings however, it is possible that you have bad RAM. It could be you got PROMOS ICs as well.

If that is the case you can either RMA in the case that its bad, or swap them for PC8500s like I did if a few conditions are met (ie they are PROMOS and you bought them before 11/28). If you want to know how to tell if you have PROMOS or not, you will need to tell me the revision number. It will be on a sticker on the RAM itself and look something like this: 6404v2.1.

This the RAM I have and I think they are PROMOS.

XMS2-6400 800Mhz 4-4-4-12 XMS6404v2.2 (Dominators) and I bought them on 11/24/06. If I go for the exchange what should I do and what will be the approx. price difference that Iam looking for.
