No, the 9800 was a rebrand, with some small tweaks. The 8800 was a monster at the time.
7970 is not faster than the 680, and the ghz is basically a heavily OCd 7970 that would OC up to about 1200 mhz. But wait! The 680s can be ran up to round 1200mhz last I checked, and suddenly now the 680 is better again.
Go ahead and just look at the graphs. The two are neck and neck, trading blows depending on the game.
So keep telling yourself the 7970ghz (which is just an overclocked 7970) is so much better. In reality, it is entirely on par with the 680, clock for clock.
This also shows that the 680 actually has a better performance index, and less power per clock. The only thing that makes the 7970 better at the end of the day is it's lower price, which some of us will happily pay extra just to avoid AMD's control panel, let alone the drivers.
So much fail in that post...you got it all wrong, must be the green goggles blurring your vision. 7970 is faster clock for clock. It has always been that way too, since stock kepler cards boost to 1100-1200mhz regularly.

Hint: more rebadging to come! Nvidia for you
Let's hope the 8970 is a beast and forces them to innovate more.
