3 Monitors on 7970?

Hey guys, I have a reference 7970. It has 1 DVI, 1 HDMI, and 2 mini-displayport out. I recently purchased 3 HDMI monitors and I'm having a nightmare getting it to work. I purchased an active adapter and it's still not working. Can anyone help me out?

I have it setup like this:

HDMI > HDMI
Mini DP > HDMI (passive)
Mini DP > DVI (active) > HDMI

Can anyone guide me through on what to do? No matter the configuration I do, I always get one monitor blanked out with no signal.

I got it working, but I'm not sure it's ideal. Right now this is how it's setup:

DVI > VGA (passive) VGA
Mini DP > DVI (active) > HDMI (passive)
Mini DP > HDMI (passive)

Any downsides to using VGA? I know everyone always advises against it, but is there really a negative?

I've been using DVI>DVI, DVI>VGA, DP>DP in my 3 monitor setup for a while, and I notice no difference between VGA and DVI.

It's not my main monitor so I don't play games and stuff on it, but watching movies and all sorts, I see no discernible differences between them.
