Q on upgrade considerations. Getting IB / PCI-E 3.0, knowing botttlenecks, OC effort?

Hi everyone.

I was considering the time / cost / benefit as of late upgrading my CPU to a 3770k, and what interest would there be to have a dual GPU X-fire config.

Luckily I stumbled upon fateswarm's post with a nearly identical consideration : http://www.overclock.net/t/1404475/delid-3570k-vs-2500k-thoughts/10#post_20298493, and followed with great interest.

So in summary:
- changing to IB with "good OC" not worth it
- most games are GPU limited, not CPU

For my case would like to take it a little bit deeper. Namely:
- my OC is not as high, and I even had to take it down to 4.5GHz after a crash 6mo later, so would an OC IB be easier to meet or beat this perf?
- would opening up PCI Express 3.0 be of value with my 7970, and therefore worth the upgrade (should bump it to 16x with my P67)?
- if I did go with IB, not looking to delid, as the benefits I saw were primarily in the 4.6GHz+ range, where I would be happy with a 4.5GHz even, so would that make it also not worth it in case I'm limited to a 4.3GHz OC (using air cooling)?
- thereafter, given the power hog consumption of the 7970's, would I see a true benefit with 2 in crossfire which should be 8x, 8x with my P67? (power supply wise, I should be ok with my 1000W)
- considering I enjoy gaming on max/ultra settings, figured the timing is right to keep ahead of the curve, before an inevitable MoBo upgrade, or simply taking everything into consideration, best to wait nevertheless?

So trying to see to what extent would I see noticeable differences and have some impact on games that I'm not quite maxed. For example even in Witcher 2, still need to employ the studdering fix which pegs it to a playable 20-25fps. Also with Borderlands 2, can max most everything but still seems to pinch frames at a few places with PhysX on high.

Finally what are ways I can tell that I am bottlenecked by CPU vs GPU vs PCI-E 2.0? Figure games that are purely CPU intensive are easy like WoW and BF3, but the rest is not clear? Simply need to light up a few diagnostic tools and see when I'm pegged at 100% in CPU / GPU? How about PCI-E 2.0 limited?

If anyone wants to take a crack at a few points even, would be great. Know I have a ton of questions in here, so appreciate any comments or thoughts. Also thanks to fateswarm for beating me to the punch and giving me an idea what to ask.

I think the answer to all your points is no, it's not worth it to upgrade. You won't see any significant performance increase by going to PCIe 3.0, maybe a few percent but probably not even that much. And virtually all games are going to be GPU limited, not CPU limited, and even those that are CPU limited are not going to be held back by a 2600K @ 4.5. You'll probably get about the same speed with a 3770K in any case, and that's not going to give you any performance increase at all in games.

Ok thanks for this, and the rapid reply.

So as mentioned that most games are GPU limited.. there also would be no real advantage using IB for the dual 7970's in CrossFire?

EDIT:
Just to be clear what I'm asking so it doesn't seem like I'm ignoring your answer: with my current build, get 3DMark 11 of ~P8600 and a 3D Mark Firestrike of ~P6500, looking at others benchmarks, know my rig is respectable, but just seems that there is a substantial gap I could close. Understand that it's all relative and these scores are a baseline, but wondering if these scores soon will matter for certain titles.

That, and I find it a real shame I bought a larger PS, and at the end nothing is worthwhile to upgrade with my build until I'm essentially looking to replace pretty much the whole darn thing. .

Appreciate your candor, just a tad disappointing I guess.

Even with dual 7970s it is only a couple of percent going from PCIe 2.0 to 3.0, and basically zero difference from going Sandy to Ivy. So I still don't think it is worth it, unless you really just wanted new hardware to play with or got a really good deal on the upgrade. Here's Anand's recent test of PCIe 2.0 vs 3.0 scaling with Titans:

Well looks like will have to find something else more worthwhile to tinker with. Sad.
