Also the breaking news picture is really unnecessary and is just more lame sensationalism.

another sad part is Intel (as other companies do) believe in I.F.E. otherwise known as "Injury Free Environment," the idea (from an employee perspective) of IFE is basically if your involved in an injury / accident while at work (regardless of severity) you as an employee must go through a "injury review" which is Intel's way of screwing a person out of work-mans compensation.

if that wasn't enough, you're record receives a "hit" / "mark" which of course comes up only your annual performance review, thus you won't be getting that X amount raise, or that X% bonus. it also stays with you for several years after the incident occurred.

Sucks for all the people affected!

I'm sure Intel is now going to have mandatory training for all employees / contractors now because of this incident.

I can't wait!

I live 15 minutes the Intel facility. I was watching local news and these nutjob reporters were talking about the possibility of having to evacuate neighborhoods surrounding the facility. LOL. But in all reality 90% of people don't know what Nitrogen is, or if it is safe or not.

Albeit this incident was not serious, it could have been bad... really bad.
~ Wikipedia

I'd be careful quoting Wikipedia. Although vast, not always reliable.

https://semsportal.apachecorp.com/Public/Safety%20Alert%20Updates/nitrogen.pdf

http://www.hss.doe.gov/sesa/corporatesafety/safety_bulletins/2005-17.pdf
How is that then?
BTW, wikipedia, for the most part, is rather accurate, but I am well aware of your concern.

Anyways, because the atmosphere is 78% nitrogen (a correction on my comment earlier), the human body cannot detect a change in its levels easily. Thus, you can die in a nitrogen rich area before knowing what was even going on.

Nitrogen is the fourth most reactive element in the universe. Fortunately, elemental nitrogen found in nature is diatomic so it tends not to react too much. Better than elemental halogens and oxygen, but dangerous if it leaks.

Pure nitrogen that has not combined with anything makes some nasty stuff. Even things that react violently with Nitrogen makes some really nasty compounds as well. Pure Ammonia anyone?

If anyone of you have worked with pure ammonia for farming (what we calling Knifing) know it is bad stuff. If you breath it in, ammonia produces ammonium hydroxides when it comes in contact with water... and it does some really nasty stuff to your insides and can burn your lungs in a heartbeat.

Diatomic nitrogen is inert and will snuff out a fire if it pushes the oxygen levels low enough.
