Alienware M17x IT Help

Thread Starter
Hey guys I am an IT Contractor currently working at an IT company in MA. We usually deal with home and business computers, but I am an avid overclocker and gamer outside of work. A client came in yesterday and brought us an Alienware M17(x?) that would not boot. On the initial post screen one of the raid0 Hdds said error occured, after clearing CMOS and running off AC power alone, the machine booted up fine but continued to keep the error. I ran the built in diags, as well as intel's raid / hdd utility to scan/check/fix the drive (BOTH drives pass DFT). Now I am a little bit lost because the machine boots up fine as long as the AC power is in, but not when it's running on battery alone. Also when the machine is in windows, I can unplug the AC adapter without crashing or any strange behavior.

In the mean time I am going to look for a bios update.

Again I usually don't post online for this type of work related stuff, but I bet the OCN community has a better idea of what's going on than the Dell community, or the people in my office ><<br />
P.s. The registry shows a bluescreen from 8 days ago related to power failure, could this have fried something in the laptop that is preventing it from detecting HDs without the AC jack?

Thanks again,
LDV

Updated bios and firmware for the seagate HDDs running in raid0 and no changes. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Also after doing some research about alienwarez I should add that there are no error codes coming from the peripheral LEDs

The HDD is most likely about to fail. Try taking a backup and change the drives.
Hell, might even be that the battery is unable to power both the HDDs at startup because of the incompetence at Alienware.

1 .Try new drives.
2. Update RAID-BIOS. This will require re-making the RAID0 and reinstalling windows.

Shouldn't take more than 1 hour to try both of these options.

Edit: You said an error occured.. Please write it down and post it here.

No error code was given, which is part of my confusion. The alienware post screen shows the raid configuration, HDD model #s, and their status. When the machine came in, the status of the second HDD said "Error has occurred" but then after doing chkdsk and using the intel raid config/utility it says "No problems found" like it did for the "working" HDD. I thought for sure that this was the end of the problem, but it was not, and I still cannot get the machine to boot without AC power. Updating bios did nothing, nor did it unlock any options in the bios to change the HDD power settings (My hopes). My client really wants to be able to boot without AC power but I am starting to think maybe it is a faulty battery. I will see if he is willing to reinstall windows and let us do a clean install on a clean raid0.

will keep posting with updates, I hope someday someone sees this thread and can solve their problem related to this machine (m17x r2) Thank you for the input Bloodcore, will keep you up to date with the situation.

In CMD Try sfc /scannow

This will check not the HDD integrity but windows integrity. It could be a busted MBR

True, though I'm not sure the BIOS would scream at him for it.
It certainly is worth a try.

Thread Starter
Just got into work, didn't check this thread over the weekend. SFC /scannow shows no errors / integrity violations. Does anyone know if there are error codes associated with alienware batteries?

OKAY! As I was writing this post I decided to press the "charge check" button on the battery, so I unplugged the AC adapter and held down the button -no unusual response- so then I flipped the laptop back over and opened it up, immediately windows gave me an error, followed by a frozen mouse -> BSOD, which leads me to think it could be a faulty battery or an error in windows power management. I will try and replicate the scenario and get more info on the error it gave me.

Anyone seen something like this before?

P.s. this also explains the mysterious power failure related BSOD logged 6 days before the client brought the machine into the shop.
