GTX 780 or GTX 670 SLI

Thread Starter
Hello Everyone,

I have been following this website for quite sometime and I wanted to know your opinions regarding my setup. I am running a i5-3570k at 4.2Ghz with one Gigabyte Windforce 3X GTX 670 (2GB) on a Gigabyte UD3H mobo. I have a cooler-master seidon 120M to cool things down while at OC, however my biggest issue hasn't been the hot temperatures, but the graphics card. I also have a QNIX QX2710 (Korean IPS Monitor) running at 2560x1440p and this unfortunately is the main issue for me. My GPU isn't pushing the best output for this resolution.

I have heard people say to go SLI on the same GPU but I'm afraid 2GB VRAM even for games such as MP3, Crysis 3 or Bioshock Infinite isn't enough. I cannot max out everything and to play on ultra settings is my ultimate goal. Keep in mind that the monitor I have has been successfully OC'd to run at 120hz and I have zero backlight bleeding or pixel issues. I know 4GB 670/770 won't allocate the whole VRAM since its 256bit, so I guess the new 780 or Radeon 7970 CF would be ideal for me. I don't have good experiences with AMD chips and I prefer the Nvidia drivers anyway.

Money is an issue and I've heard people say that I can't play max'd out with a single 780 setup on 1440p so ideally I'd need a SLI 780 setup either way. 780's are expensive and so for now I can only afford one GPU, maybe I can get the other one during winter, but for now a single GPU has to do. So should I spend almost $700 on a single 780 or just buy another 670 for ~$300? I can sell my 670 right away for $300 but I spent $400 on it last January, so do you think I should take the hit and go overboard with a 780? Playing at max settings is my target, call me greedy but that's what I want on such a beautiful monitor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In my eyes CrossFire 7950s or 7970s would be deal for you at that res. Memory size and bandwidth is important here, plus how cheap are 7950s in comparison to 780s?

If you don't expect to be able to add a second 780, then absolutely go SLI with your 670. Two 2GB 670s are more than enough for 1440p. The biggest thing that affects VRAM is antialiasing, but @ 1440p I have never needed more than 2x MSAA and I usually use FXAA. The amount of pixels present makes anything higher fairly pointless.
The only game that you can expect to have to turn down a few settings on is Crysis 3, but unless you have 3-4x Titans/780s, that's going to be the case regardless.

I get better frame rates with 2x 680 Lightnings (1384core/7988mem) than I ever did with 2x 7970 Lightnings (1280core/6968mem), despite the latter having 3GB VRAM. That, and I am apparently very sensitive to micro stuttering as the 7970s gave me migraines.

2x 670s are still one of the most powerful and versatile card setups for the money...

Op, welcome to OCN smile.gif

2GB will not hold you back @ 1440p unless you use massive amounts of AA which is not that necessary at said resolution (you'll also need massive GPU power to get decent FPS).

If you have 700$ to spend and can sell your 670 for 300$, then the ultimate Nvidia setup would be 2x 770 Lightning's .

770 SLI benchmarks @ 1440p.

Since I just moved from 7970s in CF to a single 780, I can tell you on a single monitor setup, no issues with stuttering except in FC3 and when the FPS drops to below 40, then its choppier than a 780 at the same FPS.

However, two 7970s are much more powerful than a 780 and I felt it in games like NFS MW, Metro LL...etc where I had to reduce the IQ settings to get acceptable FPS. So my 1st choice would be the 7970s.

Plus, you can get one for 309$.

Here's how to put your rig in your sig:

Find a used 670 and try it out. If you aren't happy you can sell it and lose nothing.

I am kicking myself for not ordering two 7970s earlier on, the sapphire GHZ editions were going for $349 each at newegg.ca with 4 free games as well. So yeah almost the same deal as the one on newegg.com right now, but I'm in Canada so I don't really get those awesome deals that often.

Anyways, thanks to all for the kind replies. It's just that with this 670 GPU, I've had issues with this uncommon monitor of mine. Sometimes the PC won't shutdown, it'll keep on restarting, something to do with the custom refresh rates as I did OC the monitor. Anyways, that's another issue but still I wanted to see if a different GPU would have changed things around. I have setup my rig here as recommended.

Lastly, from a budget perspective, another 670 is definitely the best choice. I don't necessarily need to have MSAA on anyway, people recommended to turn it off and have all other settings at High or Ultra for 1440 gameplay on Max Payne 3, Dishonored, Bioshock Infinite etc. Thanks to everyone again and I think I'll go with another 670 and adjust the VRAM usage.
