Computer Freezes Often - Cannot Run SFC /SCANNOW - CHKDSK /R Does Not Complete - Freezing in SAFE MODE!

Just a few days ago, my secondary rig, the X58 system in the signature, began freezing while in Windows.

It's a dual boot system with Win 8 Pro and Win 7 x64 SP1. The freezing happens in both OS's; Win 7 is installed on the 'C' drive (2 SSDs in RAID-0) and Win 8 is installed on 'H' drive (regular 7200RPM HDD).

Most of the issues are in Win 7 since that is what I use most. Tried running SFC /SCANNOW and it just freezes midway and I am having to hard-reboot. I tried running it in Safe Mode and same problem; it freezes in Safe Mode as well!

I've tried running SFC /SCANNOW and CHKDSK /R using Windows 7 installation DVD and the SFC command does not even run! It keeps saying, "Windows Resource Protection cannot perform this operation." CHKDSK ran but during step 4 of 5, it had a ton of messages that said something like, "There is not enough space to replace bad clusters..." and specified a ton of different file names in the Windows directory.

Now, I cannot even boot into Safe Mode! After the initial files load, the screen just turns black and the mouse cursor is there but nothing happens; I can't even move the mouse.

This is extremely frustrating and I don't know what's causing this problem.

When I was able to get into Windows 7 desktop, I had a ton of "COM Surrogate has stopped working" errors pointing to "dllhost.exe" and "RPTC4.DLL". These errors, after a lot of searching apparently are caused by Acronis True Image 2013. I tried to uninstall it and half way, the computer froze!

I then logged into Windows 8 and ran SFC /SCANNOW on the C: drive using an elevated Command Prompt.

It was stuck at 100% for a LONG time but somehow finished afterwards. It said it found corrupt files but was unable to fix them. Upon reboot, it said the computer was "repairng C:" and then booted to Windows 8 without error. I then tried to open Command Prompt and a blank window showed up with just a blinking cursor(?).

I had to hard-reboot, yet again.

This is extremely frustrating for me. I have a feeling something is wrong with the 2 SSDs in RAID-0 that Win 7 is installed on but why would Windows 8 also freeze (installed on a separate HDD)? CHKDSK doesn't complete and gives errors. SFC /SCANNOW ran once without fixing the files and failed all other times.

I ran CHKDSK last night and left it - it was stuck at 23 percent (stage 4 of 5) for over 5 hours! I had to hard-reboot.

What can I do to fix this short of reinstalling the OS after wiping the SSDs clean?! The thing is, I have 2 G-SKILL SLC SSDs (when SSDs were relatively new in 2009) that have no firmware updates (only MLC SSDs from G-Skill do) and so I am not sure how to run a secure erase on them? Would Parted Magic work on these SSDs?

Would appreciate any help with this. I really need to get this secondary rig working properly again!

I also tried a System Restore (June 17 was the earliest - don't know what happened to the others) to no avail. The freezing still occurs unabated.

Ya use a parted magic boot disk. Go to menu>System Tools>Erase disk> Internal
Sounds like your whole file system was corrupted somehow.....
EDIT: Those SSD's may be reaching the end of their life cycle......

I was able to run CHKDSK on the C: drive (Win 7) from Windows 8! It seemed to run completely and then I ran SFC /SCANNOW and that ran fully as well. The computer works properly now - been testing it for the past 12 hours and no lockups or freezes! thumb.gif
