Some question regarding upgrades

Thread Starter
I just bought a second hand AMD FX-4100 just for teh lulz since it's so cheap so I quite curious how it perform as compared to my previous Phenom II 955BE. Performance wise in benchmark it is worse than Phenom II 955 at 3.8GHz even when it runs at 5GHz but it's a LOT of fun overclocking and tweaking it that now I wanted to replace the cooler with something like Corsair H100i because it's reaching 70C in Prime95 and my CoolerMaster Hyper 412 with Arctic PWM fan can't cool it down. But for the price of H100i I could get FX-8320, so should I get better cooler and shoot to the moon or just buy a faster CPU? I guess my current cooler is enough to cool down the FX-8320

If anyone curious whether upgrading from one of the best Phenom II to one of the worst AMD FX first gen, it's not worth it, but for sure it's alot more fun to overclock if you get it cheap. Weirdly, Serious Sam 3 I been playing runs a lot smoother, framerate never dropped below 60fps even in heavy fight unlike my Phenom which drops to below playable level thumb.gif

Well the first thing you need is a new PSU sory what you have is not very good

Quote from Xbitlabs review

The Vantec ION2+ VAN-600AS is the worst product of this review. It is inferior in almost every aspect to the Hiper M600 which is based on the same platform and was itself far from brilliant in our previous test session. Perhaps the Andyson Performance F platform is far from perfect, yet the ION2+ VAN-600AS is surely not the best implementation of it.

Its based on the old Andyson Performance F series

Ah thanks mate for pointing that out, I never read that before. I have a couple of choices for PSU:

1) Seasonic S12II 620W
2) Silverstone Strider Essential 600W

Which one of this is better? I hope ~600W power is enough for my rig

XFX Core Edition are Seasonic S12II but cheaper if you cant find that then S12II is fine

Also 520 watts if you have that there? is more then enough if you cant find it go 620 thats fine

There are no 520W S12II or XFX Core Series but there is Seasonic 550W G Series but it's more expensive than the 620W S12II weirdly, for a little more I could get the modular version, M12II of the 620W

G series has some models that are DOA and others have coil whine

So just stick to the S12II i have not heard anything bad about that one
