Thermalright HR-03 w/ATI x1900s - Page 3

edit: sorry if offtopic, this has been a v instructive thread for me (i'm about to get the x1950xt)
I've got an x1950 XT myself, I'm using the stock ATI cooler.
I'm considering buying one of these coolers, and throwing on one of those Silverstone fans.
I'm warry about it, though, I'm not sure if it will fit because of my BT. There are 3 PCI-E 1x slots above my card, then the BT is there, is that enough space.
It looks like that is ton's of room. I would assume that it would fit, but I'm not sure how big a BT really is. Just assume that wrapping it around the card would fill up the 1st pci space above the card. And adding a fan on top, would fill another.

But I would suggest have a fan blow from the front of the card to the back of the card across the HS.

Last, you don't need a good fan to cool with this thing. I have my Silverstone fm82 running like 600rpm to cool it, volt modded. Any fan will do the job, its just a matter of noise for me.

I have a 90mm fan modded into the side of my case to blow directly on my card, putting a fan actually on the sink would essentially help exaust all my heat.
If you have a side fan blowing at it, you probably won't need to mount a fan on it. Try passive first...

I enjoy overdoing things, and noise doesn't bother me.
But I'vve decided to mount a Silverstone FM121 (or a Nidec fan from Xoxide) on my BT and I'm going to use the stock BT fan on the HR03 when I buy it.

I've got a spot cooler (finally found a use for it) blowing air at the heatpipes on my lower card. Without it the card hits 102 degrees (centigrade) in Oblivion! The top card peaks at about 80 when passive but the zalman on the cpu draws alot of heat off it. The spot cooler keeps it all respectable & isn't audible at all.

However, with the original cooler i could fit 2 gfx cards & 2 pci card in the case no problem; with the HR-03's I've had to remove the backplate from my wifi card & trim some of the slots in the exhaust plate of the upper GFX card so as to make it fit!

Yea I hear that! I actually shorted out my sound card because I was tryin gto make the HR-03's fit with a fan and my X-Fi was in the way, but just by a tiny hair. I wound up ruining it by trying to bend the heatsink on it, so I had to buy a new one :-(

But the HR-03's rock. Do you have a link for the cooler you're using? It sounds interesting.

Ouch on the X-Fi, I knocked the LED off my wifi card when I forgot to pry open enough slots in the exhaust plate!!

Here's a better pic:

That thing is sick. I want one.

You should post it in the Air cooling sections, I doubt anyone has ever seen that thing.

Nice find.
