AMD Phenom II X4 965BE vs AMD Phenom II X4 980 BE??

Thread Starter
I am on a budget build, and I want the best price to performance ratio as possible for my CPU. I do plan on overclocking, so also recommend a budget aftermarket cooler.
Will be used for gaming, browsing, rendering, and virtual machines.

Thanks in Advanced,

The 980BE was the highest-clocked Phenom II ever released, at 3.7 GHz, more than two years ago. It was nothing but AMD skimming off the cream of the Deneb production line.

If you're considering buying a Phenom II new, you'll do just as well with a 965. It seems like when AMD wound down Deneb production, it marked all of the top-binned chips as 965's, and new 965's from the final production runs routinely make it to 4 GHz or better. At the time of the 980's release, it was the only Phenom II that you could expect to clock that high.

As far as the cooler goes, what is your budget, and how much do you plan to overclock? You can always count on the 212 EVO at $30 to do a great job, but there are even better options if you spend a little more.

I have a AMD Phenom II X4 955 B.E C3 stepping and specs are in my sig, but my MSI motherboard is 4pin which are commonly known to have weak VRMs so my cpu could be stable 3.9 or even 4.0 and I just don't know it. I never got to try it on a different motherboard with a 8pin and AMD lacks a good overclocking MATX motherboard with a 8pin.

I ran at 3.9GHz @ 1.551v for 1hr 35min and then it crashed in Prime95, now I'm just keeping my motherboard cpu voltage under 1.50 to be safe.
