Help for a newbie?

Hi all,

I am contemplating building a basic server for the family and people around the house.
My main reason for this is because once i pass my comptia exams (on Wednesday) i will most likely be going into the Microsoft qualifications.

I have no real hands on experience with servers but i deal with computers on a daily basis at my job (I.T refurbishing, building P.C's fixing etc etc)
I have a dream spark account through my college and have recently downloaded windows server 2012 (essentials) is this a good one to start with? if not recommendations please!

I am toying with the idea if it is possible to build a small and not very power consuming home server type p.c. would love it to be m-itx but if not possible then not too bothered. Also I've read it is possible for people to access remotely into the server and grab files. This would be a really nice feature as a lot of my family is spread out around the country.

So what i am asking is basically what sort of hardware will i be needing to make this as less costly as possible. I am only really wanting to do this to get some real hands on experience with working on a server. And also the best way of setting it up, i am not going to be needing mass amounts of storage but enough drives to set up a decent raid and flow of data.

I will probably not be starting for a while yet, like i say i am just toying with the idea as i thought it could boost me in preparation for my next year of education.
What i am wanting to achieve like a real lazy person is the maximum amount of experience/knowledge from a low as possible costing project.

So any advise would be really useful and greatly appreciated!

Thanks for reading. thumb.gif

Ben.

Hi Ben,

Just finished my MCSE exams and I think the best way to go is to use the following link:

Windows Server 2012 Virtual Labs

No need to build any PCs for that. In the case you want to have Win Server 2012 installed, you can create a Virtual Machine using VMWare Player

Hope you pass your exam with flying colors thumb.gif

Whenever I hear the words 'server' & 'remote access', my mind goes straight away to 'Security'.

Have a look at a VPS explanation here, it might suit you better in the beginning.

Thanks! I feel confident as i have the xams to practice with using a handy piece of software called Visual CertExam Suite biggrin.gif

Yes i am having second thoughts on the whole remote access thing, i think it will be best just to go with local users for now.

Any way i have decided on going with the VMWare option after doing a small amount of research. It will end up being the cheapest and hopefully give me the results i need so thank you Peiler for the suggestion! I will purchase the software when i pass as a sort of treat to my self.

So for now any hints and suggestions on the basic setup would be appreciated.
