Feedback on Video Needed -4K-

Thread Starter
I have been trying to record and encode 4K video since about a week ago with my X79 rig.

It's not perfect but I'm getting close to achieving a constant 30FPS recording @ 4K (4096x2160).

I recorded this small clip of BF3 in 4K (Click on 'Original' quality):

http://youtu.be/v7mlG9x5_m0

For those of you who don't have 4K monitors or Eyefinity/Surround setups with 4K+ resolution, you can right-click the video and click "Stats for nerds" and it will show the resolution it's playing.

I would appreciate feedback on the video; constructive criticism is welcome.

1.) What do you guys think of the video?

2.) It was not edited at all (straight encode after recording).

3.) What are some positive things about the video?

4.) What are some things that you think can be improved?

I usually record gameplay with a 1080P camcorder - example below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIhieINyjl4&feature=share&list=PLg1oOJ486INkA9-et-lotRozImZk5dmej

5.) How do the 2 videos (4K vs. cam video/1080P) compare? Which one do you guys like better? Why?

I'm just trying to get some feedback to see if it's worth going through the hassle of recording, editing, and encoding/rendering 4K video when most viewers can't view the video(s) in that resolution! I'm sort of "future-proofing" the videos if you will. Plus, 4K video looks incredible! biggrin.gif

Editing the videos are a major pain because Premier Pro CS6, although it allows 4K encoding, the video has to be 24FPS. I tried rendering another BF3 video after editing it and the original clip was 30FPS and so the end result was a schizophrenic mess. mad.gif

Sony Vegas Pro 12.0 has the same problem. Trying to render a 4K video @ 30 FPS, or even 24FPS is not working out well. I can render raw 4K footage (without effects, intro/out-tro etc.) but that is not what I want. I want a full-fledged video (like my 1080P example above) in 4K resolution.

Any advice on this is appreciated. And of course, I would like to see what kind of suggestions you guys have regarding the whole 4K gameplay videos thing. smile.gif

*EDIT: Why can't I embed the videos? confused.gif

  1. I see no original setting.
  2. I can't even load 480p, I don't see why most people would really want 2160p...
  3. If only yt didn't compress videos; 1080p would be just as good as 4k for everyone with 1080p monitors.
  4. What did you use to record with? I saw your comment about fraps using up too much disc space. Try afterburner on 85% and see how it works.
  5. Make sure you remove the & and everything after for it to embed correctly.

Hmm.. that's really weird(?).

I can see the video with the options correctly(?).

YouTube took a couple of days for the 4K option to appear correctly (was showing @ 2K first).

I used Dxtory to record. Both FRAPS and Dxtory kill framerates at these resolutions. The other "issue" is that I play at a different resolution than 4K - so while playing at my native resolution, I'm actually recording it at 4K. I tried recording at my native resolution but that doesn't help framerates much; and it takes up more space!

I guess YouTube's 4K option is still in its nascent stage but it does work (after a few days lol).

Also, the embed code is just that code I use all the time but it doesn't seem to embed here for some odd reason(?).

You are correct, I see the option now. It would take me all day to load it though. lmao.

Recording in 4K, even in 1440 right now seems a mute point. The majority of users cannot take advantage of the video. Personally I just do not see a demand for this that is big enough to be worth the effort.
My connection at work is incapable of playing either video. Too much buffering. Boo hiss.

Pointing a video camera at a monitor never seems like a great idea. Especially seeing those bezels. Blaaaaaaaaaah.

I understanding the appeal of playing games at 4K and downsampling (seeing as I have a 1080p monitor). Makes for much higher quality screenshots, too. But I don't see the appeal of actually recording a 4K video. Monitors of that size are rare, and I'd still prefer to see 1080p video.

For now, it doesn't seem like it's worth the hassle.

1.) The 4k video looks good, except the bitrate needs to be higher, you can see some pixelation on the chat messages as well as some other text in some parts of the video.
2.) Is this a question?
3.) I like the 4k res, except it's utterly useless to me, because I'm only using a 1440p screen. Might want to tone it down to 1080p when rendering or maybe even 1440p, because IMO when viewing 1080p videos fullscreen in a 1440p display they look kind of bleh.
4.) Higher bitrate - might need to buy another HDD or two for RAID0 to have good recording speeds though. Are you using Dxtory to record? If not, I really recommend getting it along with Lagarith Lossless codec for smaller, great looking files.
5.) Well obviously the 4k one looks better, when you record a screen with a video camera it usually looks kinda bad, and the 1080p cam one appears interlaced, as in some instances you can see horizontal lines across the screen.

But nice start, hope you can get your recordings perfected!

Thanks for the feedback so far guys. I appreciate it.

So, if I understand correctly, you guys would prefer just 1080P (or 1440P/1600P?) recording instead of 4K? The reason I want(ed) to do 4K gameplay is that it's quite rare; there are a TON of people who record gameplay at 1080P so I'm not sure how I can differentiate my videos from those of others? Also, if I record in 1080P, it doesn't really capture the monstrosity of the rig I'm playing on. I essentially wanted to put the "experience" (if you will) of playing on a 4K+ resolution screen for others to vicariously enjoy.

What do you guys think about the following:

1.) Record 4K video but downsample it to 1080P for YouTube(?).

2.) Put a link in the video for those want to download the "full" 4K version of the video -- and also have a 1080-60P version for download since YouTube only allows 30FPS -- this is possible only if I record in 1080P/1440P/1600P as 4K cannot record @ 60FPS (I wish LOL).

3.) Create a photo gallery on the site with pics that are native resolution(?) -- There are some wallpapers on there that are already at 5160x2560 -- I can create more

Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

I'm also waiting to try out that Shadowplay from Nvidia to see if recording @ 4K is feasible at a decent framerate (30+fps). I have been using FRAPS & Dxtory (both Lagarith & x264).

I'd just stick with 1080p. Downsampling really doesn't look that much better, and while yeah, everyone does it, there just isn't much point to higher.
