Month-old HIS 7950 possibly dying

Thread Starter

A little over a month ago (my sales receipt says May 15, 2013) I purchased HIS's 7950 Turbo IceQ X2. Within 2-3 weeks of that I dabbled with overclocking it using MSI Afterburner. At 1.150v I had it running 1050mhz core/1575mhz memory and I used Unigine Valley and Heaven for stability testing and FurMark for heat production testing and GPU-Z to confirm new frequencies/VRM temperatures. About two weeks ago I started getting some problems with the card so I reset everything to stock 950/1250 (reset button in AB). Since then the problems have persisted, but really less frequently. I have not noticed any problems while folding and BOINCing, whether overclocked or stock other (completion times went down with the overclock), nor have there been any problems using full screen applications like youtube and netflix.

Default seetings, as according to AB:

- Core Voltage (mV): 1125

- Power Limit (%): +0

- Core Clock (MHz): 950

- Memory Clock (MHz): 1250

- Fan Speed (%): Auto

The ASIC quality according to GPU-Z: 53.7%

How I overclocked it:

- Using MSI Afterburner I increased the core frequency by ~10mhz each time until the display driver crashed, in which case I went back to the previously "stable" frequency.

- When I found a seemingly stable core frequency, I reset the core to stock and incresed the memory clock by 50mhz each time until I reached the maximum setting supported by AB w/o unofficial overclocking mode enabled.

- I then attempted to run both the overclocked core and memory frequencies and ran through several benchmarks of Unigine Valley and Heaven on the "Extreme HD" preset (which configured the resolution to my unfortunate 1366x768 max resolution).

- At some point during the overclocking process I increased the voltage from 1125mV to 1150mV.

- To my surprise, the VRM's never changed temperatures between idling, load, stock, overclocked (according to GPU-Z sensors).

- I have a record of my overclocking results like: average, max, and min FPS; and score. I was monitoring the temperature during eve3ry stress/heat test and it never exceed ~65C.

The problems, as mentioned above:

- During overclocking/testing, sometimes the card would get reduced fram rates and would perform worse the further it was overclocked, it didn't matter if it was 5mhz higher or 50mhz higher. Resetting to stock or restarting the computer resolved this.

- Within the past 1-2 weeks ago I noticed graphical glitches while playing League of Legends with my friends, but I saw nothing in any other game (right now I'm only playing Minecraft and LoL, but I didplay through Bioshock Infinite after overclocking and nothing was happening other than an awesome game). My setting in LoL are maxed out with v-sync off.

- The graphical "glitches" are not artifacts to my knowledge, no images were distorted, stretched, no color wash-out, no dead pixels. Instead, the screen flickers/jumps and jumps with 1 second, sometimes a few seconds if it repeats itself. A purple bar usually appears for the duration of the screen flicker/jump. I think it can flicker for a longer period of time (3-4 seconds) if I have the overclock applied.

- Sometimes, particularly with high contrast, I can see a horizontal line going down the screen when looking at it from an angle, similar to the lines you see when looking at a CRT screen through a camera.

What I have done/am planning to do:

- I have changed my monitor to a slightly newer (purchase date) monitor that is the same resolution and the flickering still occured.

- I have changed the monitor to computer cable and the vga to div-i adapter (I really wish I had a straight DVI monitor!)

- I am planning to reinstall my previous card (5770) to test

- If it's necessary to change out other hardware I have an extra processor and extra ram that I can use

- Anything else that anyone can suggest I do; eventually I plan to warranty the card through HIS, unfortunately I've already passed the 30 day RMA policy from newegg and I have redeemed all the game codes.

On another note:

- When I installed the card for the first time my system would not boot. For some reason I had taken half of my ram out (maybe I was cleaning or something?) and must not have put it in completely flush (I thought it had snapped fully into place) because it booted without the ram I had taken out and also booted when I put that ram back in (maybe it was flush that time).

- I have two sticks Patriot G2 ram and two sticks of Patriot Viper 3 ram, 1600mhz and 16gb total.

- I was looking through a minecraft video I made on a friend's server in April (when I was still using my 5770) and there may have been a screen flicker/jump at one point.

- There have been no problems re-running Unigine Valley/Heaven with and without the overclock applied.

Here are the guides that I read since this was my first gpu OC:

Any help is greatly appreciated. I can't think of any other information right now. My most current rig is what's in my sig.

Did you forget to raise the power limit? rolleyes.gif Has to be 20 or above for OC to work.

Yeah I did increase the power limit to +20%. I did read some guides before overclocking since it was my first oc'ed gpu. I'll put links to the guides in my first post. Thanks smile.gif.
