Bitfenix Prodigy Slot loading

So I want to use an Apple slot loading DVD Drive, because I had it laying around and because I wanted to clean look of the FT03 for example. So I bought one of the Silverstone 5.125" adapters. It's perfect, accepted the faceplate was a brushed aluminum, and it did not fit in all with the rest of the case (a white Bitfenix prodigy). So I decided to make my own cover. I measured out the original since Silverstone refused to give me the measurements, drew it up in AutoCAD and printed it out!

I'm waiting till I have to take my pill the park again to put the little eyelash like things on the inside, since I forgot to do that, and it takes like 10 minutes with this case.

You want even cleaner, unscrew the whole white front cover and replace the entire thing with a single piece with only a slot. I might have to go find a slot load DVD drive for my wife's white Prodigy since I'm replacing the front panel anyway.

Problem is where to get the right material...

I'm going to be replacing it with white 1/8" acrylic. Same with the side panels. Hopefully will be offering these as kits in the near future. The case I'm working on is for my wife. I'll be lighting up pink inside, masking the back of the acrylic with a pattern of Japanese cherry blossoms, so the lighting will show through when the system is on.

woah that's some nice modding going on props thumb.gif . I like the stock look thou, that's why I go the prodigy, and what's more, that's why I got the louder worse-performing white one over the black one, I like the looks.

If I could get the same material to make a new front panel out of, I would definitely try it. I asked BitFenix for it, since they're now offering like 10 different kinds of replacement panels, but they said they don't plan on it.

Looks like they do have a front panel that is white edge (back) with black or other color front. You could mix and match to eliminate the black trim around the front panel. The panel is two pieces, and they are simply screwed together. You just pop the four easy to reach tabs inside the case and drop it out. You probably had to do that anyway to mount your optical drive. Only thing I hate on that case is the twist-off optical bay cover that's part of the metal case shell.

You got me to thinking about slot loading drives so I found one yesterday on EBay for $20. Good deal. I went for it. Should arrive soon. When I get that sorted out and mounted, I'll come back and post it here.

As far as the "soft touch" coating on their parts, it's just a spray on silicone coating. Pretty sure it's available somewhere if that's what you really want to replicate. I think for my wife's, I'm just going with the white acrylic, but I'll sand it down for a matte finish. This product *might* be on the right track http://www.anchor-electronics.com/spotlight/chemicals/mg_chemicals/silicon_conformal.html but don't take my word for it. I haven't been over there, but saw it yesterday while looking up hours for a different store. Google returned this place in a "similar places" result.

That would be cool but costly lol. Sof touch isn't the only problem: getting the color 100% is also hard. Mine is slightly off. Unnoticeable, unless there's good lighting and you look straight on from very close.

Yeah slot load drives are as cheap as normal drives in the end, and one of those + this is golden. You can mount your slim ODD + 4 2.5" OR 1x3.5" (I stuck mine on with double sided tape, works perfectly).

If you do do that mod, do a log!
