A RAID is a redundant array of independent discs. It works by allowing the sharing of data transfer between two or more discs. This means that re-accessing the data is a lot faster because two halves of the shared data are being accessed and transferred at the same time instead of sequentially ( please forgive the simplified explanation , those of you who are less technically challenged than I ).

Sata 1 and 2 are conventions that physically allow for faster speeds of data transfer... so --- and IDE RAID will be slower than a SATA1 RAID.

This is a gross oversimplification of the issue.

ok so what your saying is that RAID is a shared file between two hard drives correct?

The RAID rottenotto mention is RAID 0, or striping. There are other forms of RAID though, such as RAID 1, Mirroring (you have the same data on two hard drives for data protection), RAID 0+1, RAID 5, JBOD, etc. Basically though a RAID is when two or more HDD are used in conjunction.

His definition of SATA is good, basically it allows for higher speeds, and has alot thinner connectors which allow for better airflow in a case.

not necisarilly one shared file but it breaks files up into pieces and then reads those pieces back as one piece of data at the same time for twice the read and write of one drive
Edit: the post above describes RAID much better than i because i was just thinking of the most common RAID which is RAID 0. google it you will learn alot that's what i did
