Unstable core speed

Thread Starter
I am using AMD FX-6100. I've been looking into overclocking my CPU but I noticed my core speed jumps around while running CPU-Z, even on optimized BIOS settings.
I've disabled Cool & Quiet and set Power Options to Performance.
While running Prime95 the core speed frequently jumps around from 3300 to 3000, and up to 3600 occasionally. I've tried overclocking my processor before and would get no errors up to 3.8 GHZ on Prime 95 without adjusting the voltage but the core speed is still dropping randomly and jumping back up.
Is there something else that is causing this or am I just being paranoid?
This is generally what I see it jumping from and will only stay at each point for many 1-2 seconds.

This seems to be an emerging trend.

I think it may be working as intended.

Thanks, was really hoping it's just working as intended but wanted to make sure it wasn't something wrong with my system somewhere. I'll continue my regularly scheduled program, thanks for the help smile.gif

Okay so nothing to worry about you think?
Right. As long as you're not getting errors or bluescreens etc while running Prime95, you're golden. As I have been learning, there are lots of factors, including the new version of CPU-Z that will show your clock speed jumping around, which it is in fact doing, usually by way of the multiplier changing. We just never noticed it before with the older versions of CPU-Z.

There are probably some ways to flatten out your numbers through BIOS apps like Cool N Quiet and the like, but I dont have all the details.

But as for you, Jabxxx. There is something else wrong with your system and you need to keep testing and pinpoint it soon. You risk damaging other components in your computer if you keep running it unstable like it is.

Thats one thing you want to disable in bios or it will jump up.

How long is it safe to run a CPU at 60c? (57-59c to be precise)

In HWinfo64, package temp is your core temp which should correspond to the Amd OverDrive Thermal Margin. So at 57C in HWinfo64 the AOD Thermal Margin should say 13C Margin left, which means the Thermal Margin on the FX6300 is 70C. Is that clear as mud ? tongue.gif

CPU temp in HWinfo64 is the socket temp which corresponds to the Asus Temp.

So, if youre at 1.55v and under your Thermal Margin, you are definately safe.
Look at the 1.75 - 2.0v AMD suggested settings for extreme cooling here on page 19.
