How far can copper go?

I'm trying to decide between FTTB from one ISP and (slightly more expensive) FTTH from another.

With FTTB, I have one major concern - the fiber part of the connection terminates in the basement's electrical room and I live on the 41st floor of a high rise. From the basement, the signal has to go up 41 floors via copper.

What kind of signal/speed degradation should I realistically expect if I go with the FTTB option?

Shouldn't be much, the solution is commonplace and using copperwires to brigde the gap is fairly common, the affect on speed shouldn't be noticable.
Fiber all the way isn't necessary

Copper is limited to 100 meters or about 300 feet. The average height between floors is 10 feet. 8' of that is for useable living space, the other 2' is for girders, heating/AC, and electrical. Given that you are on the 41st floor that means you are outside of the requirements for copper (your at roughly 410 feet), however risers in highrises usually are fiber up to a central DMARC at least in the States. You should verify with either the building Engineer or the local telco on how they have it terminating in your building. You could also request FTTP, but that would require you to have a media converter.
