Yet another "What should I upgrade next?!" Thread.

The build in question is my Sig Rig. I have a little bit of spare change ($300-ish) just sitting in my paypal from some recent crap selling. Now, I say $300, but I don't want to blow all that unless it's the best out there and I wont have to upgrade for like... 2-3 years.

It's not that my rig is under performing or anything, its just I feel it could do a bit better. The 7970 and i7 are handling pretty much anything I throw at em like a tank going against a wall.

The main three things that I see are in line for upgrades are:

Ram. It's just some generic 8g DDR3 that I had laying around when I built this thing 2 years ago.
PSU. Friend gave it to me when his old rig died. Not the best, but it's still working
SSD. The load times on some programs/games are just brutal.

Personally, I think it's between the Ram and finally getting a SSD.

Anyone have an opinion?

(If it helps, I game ALOT, aswell as multitask damn near everything. By that I mean, I'll have BF3 running 1920x180, Spotify, and a live stream going on.))

SSD, for sure. You can get a really nice 256 GB SSD (Samsung 840 Pro or the like) for well under $300. It will make everything you do so much snappier.

Buying more/faster RAM is not going to be at all noticeable in comparison. But you might have enough funds to do both.
What speed is the RAM? I'm not sure of US pricing but I imagine you could probvably buy an SSD and 8Gb of decent RAM for $300, not sure though, I know you can for £300 here in the UK rolleyes.gif

If you were looking for an SSD I'd suggest the Samsung 840, it seems to have got good reviews across the board and everyone recommends it thumb.gif

RAM I'm not to sure on but that's just my advice, hope it helped biggrin.gif

That's what I was thinking. Just wanted a few opinions. I've heard nothing but great things about the 840. Might finally get with the times and grab one.

So, anyone have some opinions on which SSD?

90% sure its a Corsair. Picked it up pretty cheap when I did the initial build.

What PSU is it exactly? If it is a super low quality PSU it might be what killed your friend's PC.

NVM: I got distracted by the TV and you have already answered the question. SSD all the way thumb.gif

An SSD and a new psu would be my suggestion then upgrade the memory if you have enough money left.

Well, looks like I'm going with a SSD. And maybe some decent Ram.

The Samsung 840's look pretty boss judging by reviews and that it seem damn near everyone has one.

My main question now is, is the extra $40 for the pro worth it over the "standard" version?

840 Pro
840 "Standard"

Just for reference. Not sure if I'm going 128gb or 256gb yet.

Get the pro version if you want speed or the standard version if you want more space for the same amount of money. I think the pro series gets faster as you increase the space so a 256gb drive will be faster then a 128gb drive but this is going by benchmarks and may not be noticable in real world performance.
