Sales of Western titles in Japan have been on the rise this generation. They obviously don't perform as well as they do elsewhere, but there's an emerging market that's comparable to Western audiences' consumption of lower profile Japanese titles (i.e. not Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Nintendo, etc.).

In fact, Call of Duty, Uncharted, Grand Theft Auto, Skyrim, The Last of Us and so on have all managed 100,000 to 200,000 sales their first week, which is better than most domestic releases that aren't the aforementioned big names.

This isn't the case in China or S. Korea, as they have embraced many western games such as SC2 and WoW. But Japan? No. They despise western games, all of them. The xbox 360 sells about 200 units a month in Japan, the same theme as applied to any and every western console or game ever released in Japan. Japan does not play Battlefield 3, Call of Duty, Assassin's creed, witcher 2, Metro Last Light. They don't like our games, they aren't even for sale over there IIRC. They play stupid and silly games, just look at the NPD data - Japan is an anomaly in terms of gaming tastes.

He's 100% correct. For a western console or western game, Japan is a complete and utter waste of time, period. NA and Europe are *far more* important markets for western style video games and western consoles. Japan has never, and will never, embrace western gaming. Microsoft is losing nothing by delaying their release there - In fact, releasing a western console in Japan is a waste of time as I've mentioned earlier. They don't play Halo, Witcher, COD, Battlefield, they hate all of our games. Thus every western game or console is doomed to fail in JP.

Talking about ignorance....

There's a big difference between market size and market orientation.. Publishers can pay western or eastern developers alike, they choose not to to avoid risk.. That, by no means, implies Japan, or other markets that share the same product orientation are less important..

I think it's a smart move by Microsoft. They sunk a lot of time and money in trying to sell the Xbox 360 in Japan and did not pay off. The reality is that they can only produce so many consoles between now and the end of the year. The system will be sold out and in very high demand through Christmas. No sense in worrying about the logistics of trying to launch in a market where they have been traditionally unsuccessful.
