Your equipment is not what gives you your internet speed. It is your provider. What you have now is fine as far as the type of connection.
Usually true, but not 100% of the time.

Example being that Comcast recently rolled out support for DOCSIS 3.0 in my area. We had been using a DOCSIS 2.0 modem. Once I upgraded to a newer modem, my download speed increased from 25mbps to 50mbps. We didn't upgrade or change anything with our Comcast service, we pay the exact same price as we did before, but get double the speed now due to the new modem. In OP's case it probably doesn't matter, but in my case it was the difference between 25mbps and 50mbps download speeds.wink.gif

This is very true, when you factor in big updates to equipment like what you had. A limitation in the previous software/hardware capabilities of that modem.

However, most modems are provided by the internet provider, and it is there responsibility to alert customers of any updates of that size. Not all of the time will they do this, but they often like to claim that existing service will not be compaitble unless the customer make the switch.

i do not believe this will factor in to OP's concern though. But, then again, we do not know who his service provider is yet.

Thanks everyone. Recently I replaced an even older and fatter Motorola modem at my mother's house that kept dropping internet connection and the phone line. Took it to one of my service provider's stores and exchanged it for an Arris (can't remember if it was a TM804G or 822- one of those two). I didn't really notice a difference in internet speeds, and I haven't heard of my ISP doing any big equipment upgrades.
