Is this normal? How loud should my HDDs be?

My computer is pretty much done...and it's super silent. Just like a faint wisper when it's on right next to me.

Enter my two HDDs. Just installed them. They're Seage Baracudas 3tb, which I got for sale. I read that they often are defective, and I've always thought that WD is perhaps better.

They're loud. By far the loudest thing in my system.

Do I need to RMA? Should I switch to another HHD? I need 6tb of storage. I'm thinking about swithcing to WD green.

Which drives are known to be quiet? I use these for media (not games) but I'd like performance enough so that 1080p (10GB movies) don't ever, ever lag.

Any suggestions?

They're both loud? Did you buy them retail?

I have a total of 8 Seagates and 6 WD's... I don't hear any of them.

Both are loud. Got them from amazon during a sale for $105 each (3tb each). It sounds like a bunch of crickets at night. Like a fan in front of you on low but with more body.

It's way the loudest thing in my case. I might go with WD Green -- they're suposed to be quiet.

I agree that WD seemns to be better than Seagate based on experience but if you are thinking about getting a WD cavier green, please try to read reviews about it because most of these units have issues. You can google it of you want. I would go for _3.5___7200rpm_64MB_SATA3]CavierBlack. However this cavier black is would almost double the price of cavier green so if you have budget constraints then you may have to settle with cavier green or you may also consider cavier red.

Are they loud when reading/writing or rotor speed as well ? My WDs are crazy that way. The read/write sound is ok, the rotors of the hdds make the case rattle like hell. The new cases need Suspensions to handle hdds biggrin.gif

Try putting one of them outside the case (sata and power cables should extend that much) on a pad sideways and run and go into bios to see how it sounds. It might be the hdd cage.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I do have a SSD that I use for my OS and programs. These HDDS would be for music, videos, pictures, etc. My priorities are (1) decent performance, no sleep modes, or slow playback (2) quiet, (3) last long. I need at least 6gb. I would consider spending extra to set up a raid to backup files.

I have a define r4 case and the HHDs sit on vibration reducers.

Some follow up questions:

Is there a important difference, given my priorities, between WD Green and WD Red and WD Black?
Is WD Green better (esp in terms of noise) than Seagate Barracudas?
Is 3tb an OK size to go with given my priorties.
To protect against file lose, I need to setup a raid and that means I sacrifice one of my 3 drives? I could do 3, 3TB then.

It seems red drives have "3D Active Balance Plus" which reduces noise. I'm considering that now.

Scratch the WD blacks off. They are noisy. They are supposed to be fast and noisy. wink.gif
The WD Reds are the 'super-reliable' 5400rpm drives (well technically, 5400-7200rpm). They come with a 3-yr warranty, hence >30% MTBF than Blacks/Greens. The Reds also produce about 24dBA in seek mode (23dBA idling).

Regarding the RAID - if you want data redundancy, that is the way to go. RAID 1 with 2 hard drives means that you get 3TB and another 3TB in a perfect mirror. So it's up to you when it comes to size. wink.giffor me, that would be perfectly enough
Sleep modes can be defined from the host OS - you can disable it from the power options.

Greens to Barracudas - in general, yes. But there are faulty Green units, so it will be luck of the draw more or less.
