New forum user needs some help with OC Q9550 on ASUS X48 board.

Hi there,

I hope I posted this in the right section, if not plz correct me smile.gif
I have a intel Q9550 currently running @ 3,79ghz.
I would really like to see how much further i can go with this rig, but I seem to be running into some kind of wall.
I will put a screenshot online from CPU-Z for anybody to see.
Any suggestions on how to achieve an even higher overclock would be very much appreciated.

I am currently struggling to get the CPU above 3,8ghz, without having to increase my voltage even further.
Actually I would like to see if there are options which maintain stability while lowering my CPU voltage.

Hopefully somebody has some super useful information smile.gif
Thanx in advance,

MeMeBot.

You simply don't have the motherboard for it. be happy that you got 3.79

Could you explain why "I don't have the board for it"?
I have seen these boards go even past 4ghz with the same CPU's.
I strongly believe it has to do with my settings rather than the motherboard or chipset itself.
Besides, i can get a higher stable clock setting around 4ghz, but I have to increase the CPU voltage to a level which is unacceptable.
Any help on this would be very much appreciated smile.gif

If your telling me you have a intel branded X48 board them i'm telling you this is the problem. They simply can't push OCes like my EP45-UD3P board can.
X48 is a good overclocking chipset but still not the best. Also being a intel board it uses cheaper parts and simply doesn't have the bios options that other brands would have.

Intel branded boards should be avoided for overclocking. My UD3P does 4ghz under 1.3v (don't remember the exact number but can power on my HTPC to find out)
So I know the Q9550 doesn't need as much, but when I had my Q9550 in my old crappy evga 780i board I needed just about 1.4v on vcore just be stable at 3.6ghz. With the same chip that is, so boards aren't created equal.

I'm sorry, I didn't mention I use an ASUS Rampage Formula, only the chipset is intel branded, not the board smile.gif
Right now i'm expirimenting with LLC settings, to see if I can maintain my current clock speed while lowering CPU voltage.
If I am successful, I might be able to up the CPU clock a bit more.
I am going to turn on LLC and see if it affects stability.

LLC is a must
Just keep it on max (or whatever setting it has for fully on)
From there do your CPU voltage adjustments. With LLC voltage setting you select in your bios will not be the voltage it actually runs at because of vdroop. Use CPU-Z to monitor vcore at load.

Also don't forget to add voltage to the NB as well.

I would have to go turn my HTPC on and write down my settings to better help you.

But the Rampage Formula should be able to do 4ghz, maybe not as well as my old ud3p but it should still do it.

EDIT:
Also is your Q9550 E0 or C1?

I can only turn LLC ON, OFF, or AUTO.
No other settings are available.
I have been getting BSOD's and errors in OCCT while lowering my voltages, both with LLC ON, and OFF.
But I do have a lot of other option available in the BIOS wich are still on auto like PLL ratio's and stuff like that, but I'm not sure as to what they mean.

Btw, i have an E0 stepping Q9550.
And i did up my NB voltage in order to get it stable.
Will it be useful to up the NB voltage a bit more?
Also DRAM voltage has been upped to 2,10 V.

Thanks in advance! smile.gif

P.S.

What I am actually trying to do, is lowering my CPU voltage one way or the other, while maintaining stability, so I eventually can increase my overclock a bit more.
Any thoughts on that are more then welcome biggrin.gif
