3DMark Advanced Question

Hey guys,

Just a quick question, don't know if I'm in the right area to put this but, I got 3DMark Advanced for free from purchasing a 780 GTX, now I ran the Firestrike Benchmark and received a score of 7700 (rounding). Now I just purchased a sound card and since my PCIe is basically blocked by the GPU, I popped that sucker in the empty 3rd slot PCIe 2.0, I reran the program to see if it will affect performance and received a score of 7500.

Even tho, the sound card isn't in the right slot will it hinder my GPU by running in 2.0 lane versus it's designated PCIe x 1 spot? Should I try moving the GPU to a different 2.0 to test if there is any performance deterioration? Or am I just wasting my time and over analyzing the whole thing? Thanks for you input. redface.gif

Run the test again. Take the card out and run the test again (twice).

You need to verify that was the reason the score went down.

Some motherboards have settings on what speeds to run the PCIe 16x lanes at. By inserting that audio card your PCIe 16x lane may be dumping to 8x and while 8x 3.0 would be fine you are on a 2.x board which could hinder the performance of the card.

My suggestion would be to move the video card to a place that does not block the PCIe 1x slot.

If you run GPU-z and look at the thing that says Bus Interface it should read PCIe 2.0 or 2.1 x16 then next to that it may read any number up to 2.1 you can click on the ? mark and then hit render test and that number should match whatever it says for the PCIe version so either 2.0 or 2.1 it will probably match that but your problem will probably be that it says x8 and not x16

That's just the way it is with the x58.

Thank you for the quick reply. thumb.gif

I ran GPU - z, once I place a load it says PCIe 2.0 x 16 @16 2.0.

According to the MB manual, the first slot run x16, when used for two GPUs it's 16/16, placing 3 runs 16/8/8. Says first slot is full x16 doesn't mention about a single card in the 2nd slot unless there are two GPUs. I would have to move the GPU to the 2nd slot in order expose the PCIe x 1 for the sound card.

Guess I better a 3.0 mb sometime in the near future to unleash this baby huh.

It would be fine to move it to the second slot... I have a x58 motherboard there is no loss for doing that...

I just don't know if you are actually loosing anything because of the card but you should do some trial and error to figure it out.

16x 3.0 usually will not speed up a single card. It is however just as fast as 16x 2.0 when in 8x mode. Therefore if you are running 3 cards even at 8x it would be as fast as 3 at 16x on a 2.0 board.

The 950 is awesome...

BUT it is also worth some money and so is that board. Don't know where you live but Microcenter is doing a 4570K and motherboard deal where you get money off the bundle and you can choose any board.

$340 for a 4670K and a Gigabyte UD4H...

You could probably get a large portion of that cash just from selling your board, memory, and cpu. New memory would cost $60

Yea I agree if I am losing any performance it's not as noticeable, ran through some trial and error w/ headsets through BF3 I'm still hitting 100+ on my current settings, wish I live near a Microcenter, I'm in Melbourne, FL.

The main difference between the new i5 and i7 is no hyperthreading like AMD right? Shouldn't really matter for gaming...hmm

Ok so finally I swapped from the first slot to the second slot, and place the sound card in it's PCIe x 1.0, I had both configurations and tested w/ 3dMark and come to find out there was only a 2 point score difference between the two setups, so I guess that solves my problem.
