PWM fans, high rpm in idle?

Thread Starter
I've bought 2 PWM fans. They are rated 600 to 1500 RPM (Noiseblocker PLPS 120mm). But idle at desktop they are running 1000 RPM?

In the BIOS I chosed manual PWM settings for CPU fan (correct header ofc) and 0.75% pr degree (lowest setting). My idle temps are 32-35 C.. Should result in ~30% PWM and lower RPM right? How can i get them down to the 600 rated RPM?

It's not for the machine in sig, but a i5-3570K on a Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H

Thanks..

Not sure how to help. I use EasyTune from Gigabyte with idle setting of 30% fan speed @ 30c CPU temp and fans spin at 700rpm with CPU @ 25-29c. With ET6 I can change settings whenever I want as don't need to go into Bios.

I see form your signature you have Asus Maximus VI Hero, so you should be able to overwrite your bios restrictions with FanXpert2, it should allow you setup your own curves and drop down till the fan allows, it even has a test that should test the fan rpms. Now one thing worth mentioning, is that the only true PWM headers are the CPU and OPT, the chassis fan while 4pin they are only voltage controlled, so most of the time a PWM fan wont go as low as its rated on pure voltage control, but on the CPU/OPT headers you should be able to have full control on 4pin PWM fans like PLPS, at the same time the CPU/OPT headers (the true 4pin pwm) cant control 3pin fans, kinda complicated and imo stupid but thats how it is.

Lass3 is setting up i5-3570K on a Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H but EasyTune does about the same as FanXpert.

Sorry i missed the last line where it wasnt the rig on your sig.

Btw im curious since you own both, there been talks about Asus FanXpert2 having the best fan control, and that most other motherboards are subpar in fan control. I saw the video of anantech and seems like gigabyte did update their easytune, but they ddint really show it really well. Just wondering now that you tested easytune and you own a Asus Maximus Hero (that should run fanxpert2), about how do you see it between both.

I have a new GA-Z87X-UD4H. ET6 is not ready for prime time. The PWM controls are fairly standard. But there is this RPM control where you can set a low RPM until CPU=70c, when the fanspeed jumps to 1200 RPM. Weird. But it works for Voltage-controlled fans, which is nice.

Also weird -- but nicely so -- is the MB's propensity to shut down the CPU_OPT fan when the CPU temp is low, leaving the main CPU fan to work alone. Quieter. This also works for Voltage-controlled fans. PWM fans scale up and down, but my Voltage controlled CPU_OPT fan goes from 0 to 50% to 100%, depending on how much it is needed. Neat.

If you need to see stuff and wear glasses, you will set Windows to scale its fonts to Medium (125%) or Large (150%). But ET6 won't work if you do.

Nice concept, but I preferred the ET6 on my GA-P55A-UD3P and my GA-P55M-UD2. Very easy to work with and those MB's adjust Voltage-controlled fans smoothly up and down.
