For someone upgrading around October/November is there any special information?

I noticed the main thing is that AMD may upgrade their GPUs (talking from an Intel CPU-centered perspective).

Intel appears to need at least next Spring for something good to come up for the Mainstream market.

NVIDIA may upgrade their GPUs but that might need February or so.

Hrm, what if AMD CPUs will be better by then, or at least Jan?

Hrm, any ideas? What do I miss?

AMD is expected to release their steamroller based APU desktop products ("Kaveri") around November. There are confirmed Quads (dual module) processors coming out then.

To be honest I'm not expecting AMD to not be a worse choice than even the current lineup and prices of Intel.

But hopefully I'm wrong. Competition is always good and it's not bad to have a choice for a budget build.

Right now even for a budget build AMD is bad, they can't even cap the CPU needs of a game.

New Ivy Bridge-e processors should be out around then. It appears that it has been confirmed that they do not have any of the TIM problems that current Ivy bridge and Haswell processors have. This would keep it in line with the current 3930k, which I own, that has excellent overclocking abilities. Plus 12 cores to boot. biggrin.gif

You mean 12 threads, right? tongue.gif

I have a 3930K too,and aside from benching I can't go back to quads! SNB-E already has a greatly improved IMC over regular Sandy, as I haveno pproblemrrunning speeds and timings like DDR3-2540 10-12-10-28 2t without even hitting 1.2v VCCSA/VTT1! The great news is that IVB-E is likely to have as much of an improved IMC as Ivy did over Sandy, which means that Quad-Channel DDR3-2800 or higher could be very realistic!

I am expecting a 5-10 percent increase in IPC, max, but as freaking fast as SNB-E is, that's not quite so small a gain as it sounds. I mean, we've had Ivy and now Haswell release (on the Intel side) as well as Bulldozer/Steamroller/whatever on the AMD side, yet Socket 2011 is still the top dog. 6c/12t + 40x native PCI-E lanes with the majority of motherboards (in the "enthusiast" price bracket) being near perfect....

The best part is that IVB-E is compatible with X79, and as far as I have heard from a few friends in the industry, there is "nothing new this September except the chips themselves", implying that current X79 boards will be the mainstay, with maybe a handful of "refreshes".

If I were in the market, well, September isn't so far away... I would grab any other parts I want as they go on sale between now and then, and then have everything ready for when you get your chip.
I would also strongly recommend water cooling (real water cooling or, at the least, a Swiftech H220), as I bet that Ivy E will be just as hot as SB-E... I don't care how good of an air cooler you have, I don't believe that anyone air cooling a hexcore SBE can do 5.2Ghz with 2500 10-11-10-28 1T memory and not exceed 37C above ambient...

Im expecting news of a 790 from nvidia, dual 780's or a 790X dual titan, 760ti, but thats all wishful thinking even though a dual titan pcb doesn't seem realistic.
