What is a safe max socket temperature?

Thread Starter
I've gone trough plenty of overclocking threads and most all of them say the same thing. They say to look solely at core temps and almost disregard socket temps. Thats exactly what I do, however, while running prime 95 with my FX8320 clocked to 3.8, my socket temp got up to around 80c while my core temps stayed within 58 - 60c. I ran prime 95 on stock settings and my socket temp got to 70c. Ive tried looking for specific socket temperatures or what people have with their overclocks but I cannot seem to find any threads about it. I just want to know what a safe limit is for socket temps since I dont want my board to melt anytime soon. I have an Asus M5A97 for future reference.

This thread has been most helpful to me too: http://www.overclock.net/t/1128821/amd-temp-information-and-guide

Thanks in advance!

Maximum socket temps are motherboard dependant. Higher quality boards can handle higher temps.

Ok that makes sense. So what about my motherboard (Asus M5A97)? I have seen threads where people have overclocked with this motherboard with success but no one has ever listed what their socket temps got to. I might just be paranoid but it just seems like 70c socket temp is quite high for stress testing on stock the stock clock. I am also using a CM V6 GT.

Sorry for the late reply, but thanks for all your help! Just curious, how has overclocking on you board been? Has it played nice?

I've not had any issues. Its not an amazing board for overclocking but its certainly good.
