Crazy High Temps?

Thread Starter
Hey all,

So I built my sister a gaming machine a few months back but it is running some very high temps (it has done this from the start, I simply have only just got around to posting about it tongue.gif). It is running an EVGA 680i SLI mobo paired with a Core 2 Extreme QX6700 CPU. It is running what I think is a Zalman CNPS 9500 Heatsink. At least that was the closest I can find in google images. When my sister is idling the core or browsing the web etc. it hovers around 55-60 degrees or so, and under a gaming load tops off at roughly 80-85. This can't be normal can it? I realize this is a Core 2 Extreme series core, but in the review Here they show that an intel processor (they dont say which one...) runs idle @ 27 and load @ 38... Any particular steps I should be doing here or is this actually normal for an Extreme series core?

Thanks,
Shadow Hunter

Try changing the thermal paste and reseating the hsf. It should run cooler than that.

Alrighty I shall take it apart again tongue.gif Just wanted to make sure that the temps it was getting wasn't normal before undergoing the disassembly. I have not had any previous experience with 'Extreme' processors, so I wasn't sure what to expect from it smile.gif

Sounds like it's either a more seating or the case isn't cooling properly.

Can you give us more information please?

What is the room temp?
What case is it in?
What fan setup do you have to cool the case?
What GPU?
Where is it setting? As in how does air circulate in and out of the area and the case?
That's pretty warm but not entirely unreasonable under certain conditions.

1) That cooler is a bit terrible.
2) Is it overclocked at all? Increasing either voltage or frequency will increase temps. Raising both will increase temps drastically.
3) What is your case, and is it will ventilated? Even the very best cpu cooler on a stock cpu will get toasty if it is in a case with no ventilation. That heat your cpu cooler is blowing into the air needs somewhere to escape otherwise your computer becomes an oven.
4) What thermal paste is used? Was it applied correctly? How long has it been since it was applied?

I remounted it and used a set of ArctiClean that i recently got. It did lower temps by ~5 degrees or so, but not what I was hoping.

Room temp ~25C
fans in the case are psu, cpu, two on gfx (GTX 560Ti Superclocked), I think one on the front of the case.
Its in an older thermaltake that I got from a friend since I was on a budget for this build. It is decent and has a half-mesh front.
It is under a desk, though the desk has about a foot from the wall so the air has in and out locations.
The core should be running stock, the only thing is it is running 1066mhz ram, but that was the stock FSB on this chip so that shouldn't affect it should it?
The thermal past I am using is Arctic Alumina. It was applied yesterday when I reassembled it.

Here's a question, I have two stock lga1155 coolers from my i5 and i7 chips. I think the tower cooler is better, but what's everyone else's opinions?

Thanks,
Shadow Hunter
