Worth it to go for sli? - Page 3

Rather have some headroom with a 1000W PSU then a 700W. its not like there is a HUGE difference in cost between a 850W and a 1000W PSU and so on. My friend did the same thing and went for a 600W PSU only to later find when he upgraded his graphics card last year(not everyone can afford to upgrade the whole system every year) his PSU was choking it and later couldn't handle it at all, It was even at stock all the time and kept crashing it constantly. So now I gave him my old 700W PSU and his Processor and Graphics card is running great, both now overclocked!

I think its a bigger waste of money having to buy new video cards every year. Yes they use less power but they cost quite a lot too and when you sell them you dont get much out of them.I find it better investment is to get a couple top end cards in SLi and a big PSU and ride it for a couple of years, its not that a 700W cant handle it, but since the price is not that far you cant blame me for wanting to get the bigger one "just in case". and its not like there aren't really any games that can not run on two GTX680/GTX780's @ 1080P monitors and for the next couple of years(since that's the regular size these days). Hell even my OC'd GTX470s (flashed GTX465's) eat everything I throw at them and a GTX780 is supposed to be equal to 2x GTX470's in SLI. So...yea, I dont know. Just my opinion. redface.gif

Running a PSU below 20% load drops the efficiency like a rock so you want to try and stay above 20% load if you can

Good information, thanks. But 20% out of a 1000W PSU would hardly be 200W. I am sure a high end SLI system overclocked will surpass that at load however now sure about the idle power draws. rolleyes.gif

I dont know where you got that kind of information; but 2 470's do not equal the performance of a 780. Even at 1080p.

I am thinking of getting 2 gtx 780 for sli, but i dont want to overclock anything.

Would the 2 780 maximize my FPS in game?

I'd say if you can afford it then go for it !

My plan was to skip the GK110 since my 3x GTX 670 2GB were actually doing a great job... but the upgrade itch came upon me again, so I sold the GTX 670's and bought one used MSI GTX 780 and one new GTX 780. I'm surprised GTX 780 SLi is 3-4% faster than GTX 670 3way SLi, but I can't complain. Next investment is a 3rd GTX 780.

*Sorry I meant GTX680 not GTX780. From what I read 2x OC'd GTX470's pretty close to a Single GTX680, but the 680 is the better card due to more memory, cool running and power draw. not that I have any problems with 1.2GB in most games at 1080p.

I believe the best spot for a PSU is between 40 and 60% on default clocks. It will not drop efficiency due to underuse, it won't drop it due to burning it, and if one attempts to overclock, it will likely only reach up to 80% which is the point it might start burning efficiency (and likely its components faster).

I just grabbed a second 4gb gtx680 and ran 3dmark 11, got X6822 for a score, not sure if that's good but. I havnt gone SLI since...well ever actually. used to have Crossfire long time ago. its kinda fun having all that power sitting there smile.gif

edit: woh just had a look back at some old results, my original run with a single gtx680 got a score of X3474. that was August last year though, who knows what drivers. CPU was still @ 4ghz though. so almost doubled it.
