How to get Windows 7 64bit on a USB harddrive or USB format from CD?

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I want to get RID of my optical bay on my PC (it makes cable management ugly and it looks outdated since most people use USB or some flash drive now)

Obviously , the only reason I need my optical drive bay is for installing windows.

I already have a CD with windows 7 on it. Is there any to transfer to this my USB harddrive or USB device?

Or do I have to purchase a brand-new digital copy online from microsoft???

thank you

Sean Webster has an awesome thread for this.

There you can legally download the ISO needed and he also shows how to make it USB bootable.

You can create a bootable USB stick and copy all the files from the CD to it, there are methods to build an image on to a large enough stick (8gb should do it)

However, this can be fiddly (havent played with that sort of thing in a while though), and there is an alternative
you can get a USB-SATA cable, and then just usb your Optical drive whenever you need it.

for example
