What is holding me back?

Thread Starter
ok so i found the hidden BIOS options in my motherboard and set my ram timings to 3-4-4-8(i beleive) and my freq. to 166 mhz, along with my HT to 3x. I then OC'd to 2.4 Ghz and my max CPU temperature in speedfan was 51 C full load with a prime 95 torture test, no errors for about 10 min. I then bumped it up to 2.6 just to see what would happen and it wouldnt boot. (atleast no blue screen of death) so i tried 2.5 Ghz and it booted, but prime 95 caused an error immedieltly and i heard a sound come from my SATA hard drive i beleive. Now i was wondering what is limiting me from reaching 2.6 Ghz, as i dont beleive its the CPU temps.

2.6 Ghz is my goal so il do whatever it takes.

Any ideas guys? REP+ to helpers!

PS: could i lock my SATA drive from auto-overclocking with my cpu? I bet that might do the trick.

Could it be your RAM?? What kind of RAM do you have??

It could be RAM. If you have cheap RAM it won't go very high. I don't know how high the FSB on your motherboard will go either, so that could be it.

And you can't overclock hard drives...

RAM (Memory) is what scales with the FSB, not your SATA drive.

It may help if you are more specific in your System config in your signature. Include brands and stuff.

Corsair VS OCs pretty good for the price. You can't say just because something is cheap it doesn't work as good as more expensive stuff.

Also, he is right, you mobo might be holding you back too.

Cheap as in quality, not as in price. Sorry for the confusion...

How many volts are you using on the cpu, and also make sure your ram is getting more volts too to overclock it.

What chipset is that? My Soltek K8T800 wont go past a certain HTT due to hardware issues present with the generation of chipset. Here is a quote from X-bit labs on the issue. Sounds like a similar problem with your board:

Quote:
This fact explains the low performance of nForce3 150-based mainboards compared to mainboards on other chipsets in many applications, critical to the data transfer rate between the CPU and chipset, even in spite of the fact that the memory controller in Athlon 64 systems resides right in the CPU. The third chipset available, the VIA K8T800, is less vulnerable to our criticizing, but this doesn’t mean that there is nothing to criticize at all. VIA K8T800 exposes its weakness at overclocking since it cannot clock the FSB and the AGP/PCI buses asynchronously. As a result, raising the CPU clock rate above the nominal, we also increase the frequencies of the AGP/PCI buses, thus making the devices attached to those buses non-operational. Particularly, the SerialATA controller from the chipset South Bridge is usually the first to fail during CPU overclocking.

Go into bios and check what default temperatures are listed to kick on / turn off your fans on the system and adjust them. If they default near 51C they might be shutting down the system causing reboots.
Sounds like ram problems (voltage, timings, etc.....).
