eyefinity/surround - is there a way to disable monitor(s)?

Thread Starter
in an eyefinity or surround setup, can you disable certain monitors when you don't need them to reduce the stress on the video card(s)?

for example: 3 monitors plugged into video card. but the user temporarily only needs 1 monitor for a 1 hour gaming session. after gaming, user needs the other monitors again

can this be done without physically unplugging the monitors?

EDIT: i guess i could give my scenario
i plan on buying 3 monitors and i already have a 1080p hdtv that's not being used right now
originally was going to build a budget pc for the tv alone but now i'm thinking using all 4 for my sig rig (after upgrading the gpu)
clearly i don't need the 3 monitors if i watch a movie on the tv while in bed and afk
or some other similar situation where i don't need all the monitors for an extended period of time

Yes and no, the time used in the nvidia software (never touched amd cards, but probably the same stuff at their camp too) used configuring and reconfiguring monitors switching on and off from multi monitors to surround and back isn't really worth it (and also, you'll use much more time if you hav custom resolution to hide some screen behind the frame)

But if you really need it (I can see why, watching non 1080p/720p films on a surround setup stretches the picture over three screens is a pita) you could go the way mentioned above, just can't see myself fiddling with the software every time going from gaming to programming/afk with a film/web browsing and back

Me and the girlfriend has just learned to live with it.. An htpc for the big screen is a good solution though thumb.gif

If you find an easy way to do this make sure to let us know smile.gif

And with the idea of an htpc, buy yourself a raspberry pi, a nas box or the cheaper solution ICY BOX IB-3640SU3 HDD (the same as nas just no wifi, only esata/USB) hook up the big or the main screen to both the pi and the rig, assuming you got more than one input on the monitor, the pi has an hdmi out with sound and make the icy box the middleman for files

When you just wanna watch a film or some easy web browsing, turn of the main rig and extra monitors, the pi will pay itself on the electricity bill within a few months, pluss you'll get some DIY OS experience biggrin.gif

If you want to turn off a display in windows 7 and make your gpu go back to stock clockspeed,
just right click anywhere on the desktop.
click screen resolution, then choose the number of the monitor you want to remain on, and set desktop to display only on it.
Its the same as unplugging the cables from your gpu.
