If Intel would kindly hand them over, I'm game biggrinsmiley.gif

A 5110p is however equal to the cost of this build, so no thanks.

Thanks for posting man.

Well the thing is, I'm not building a folding rig or simulations/MD crunching server. I'm building a workstation. The SM boards miss USB features, SLi/CF capability etc. this is a workstation board. Also, I got a good deal on it smile.gif

Update I - 07/07/2013 - Enter The Core

So the first update as promised. The idea of this update is to paint you an image of what the core of this build is going to be like and circumstantiate my hardware considerations.

The Motherboard

So this is the board that will be powering Pernod. Like I said earlier, I chose this board just because it's ideal for a workstation. Think of it as a hybrid of a gaming machine (high IPS, flexibility and connectivity) and a work server (reliability, scalability, modularity). For actual server quality, reliability and support of NICs, SAS controllers etc. or simply cheaper alternatives you might want to look at Supermicro boards.

Box in a box, typical for Asus. It lists all of the WS features of this board and what they claim to be GPGPU boost for multiple Tesla boards. C602 chipset typical bandwidth, 80x PCI-e 3.0 compliant lanes, SATA and USB connectivity, etc. Mostly PR stuff I'd imagine but I won't have the cash to check this out anytime soon so ... yeah, cool stuff laughingsmiley.gif

And what was included in the box. A crapload of SATA cables

My reaction (Click to show)

-- disclaimer: I didn't count them, and won't use them (Those colors sicksmiley.png).

Some USB adapters, I/O shield, 2, 3 & 4-way SLi bridges and some manuals no one ever reads ...

... the board itself ...

... with a debug display, 14 SATA ports and 7 PCI-e 3.0 Slots (only the blue ones operate in x16 mode)

My reaction, again... (Click to show)

Well, I did choose the board for connectivity, but I only needed like SLI/CF capability, 3x PCI-e and restricted SATA boards... Though this is also cool thumbsupsmiley.png

The RAM

Moving on we've got the Corsair Dominator Platinums. Very glad I got these for free, they look great but dat price nerdsmiley.png...

And then, everything installed

Upon capturing all that platinum, the battery in my main camera died so the following pics will have slightly dimmed lighting due to the lens of the other camera being smaller. The sun did become more intense at this point so maybe it wasn't such a bad thing... laughingsmiley.gif

The reaction of my Olympus camera this time... (Click to show)

And so we continue with the lesser camera.

The PSU

Then the last part of this update, the PSU. I actually wanted a PSU that wouldn't limit me later on if I decided to fill all those PCI-e ports. My main priorities were the dual EPS connectors for the Asus Z9PE-D8 WS motherboard and efficiency though. Luckily my man Hukkel pointed me towards an advertisement that satisfied all of the aforementioned conditions for a good price, thanks mate thumb.gif. So there you have it, a 1.5kW Coolermaster Pro M2 PSU pulled straight out of l3p's Project - "Red Cross" and offered me a great deal.

Those cables bigeyedsmiley.png

These are unnecessary and the PSU doesn't even fit all of them -- yes, this is the first time I used a modular PSU upsidedwnsmiley.gif

So just checking the possibilities here. I can have at most these cables connected as far as 6/6+2 pin connectors go ...

... which means 6x 6+2- pin connectors combined from the non-modular cables, and again 6x 6+2 pin connectors combined from the modular cables... wackosmiley.gif

~Intermezzo~

"Giving people too many choices tends to lessen their satisfaction."

“Maximizers” are people who, given a choice, will exhaustively search all the options, seeking all possible information, in order to make the best possible choice. This behavior generally consumes a lot of time, and often leads to nagging doubts, perhaps where no one clear winner emerged.

“Satisficers” are those who settle for a choice that is “good enough” for them These people are generally happier with their choice, and spend less time choosing, leaving them free to enjoy other things. --Barry Schwartz, The Paradox of Choice

... Yeah ... and now what really mattered to me ...

... dual EPS and 24-pin ATX cables

And then the conclusion

I hope to have a new update next Wednesday but I can't promise anything blushsmiley.gif

Thank you for reading biggrinsmiley.gif
