Need help, FX-4170 OC - Page 4

I think you schpuld be fine ,but like you said watch those temps. Not that iam a prime expert iam just assuming you scjould be ok as long as your not cooking the cpu lol. Would you mind if I tried copying your settings? For some reason I cannot get my cpu multiplier anything over 16.5 and it wigs out completly! Maybe I schould also increase ht link speed? I tried with multi, voltage bump and fsb but not stable even in games everything was running x3 like when you fast forward a movie you know? (weird) Iam also wondering if my ramm might be xausing this?

Hey man,

By all means, try my settings and give it a go. I'm posting a CPU-Z validation just to go over my final OC settings and see if anything else needs to be done.

http://valid.canardpc.com/2866473

4.6Ghz is the maximum OC I can accept with regards to temps and voltage. 1.392 is the stock voltage. Tried taking a realistic approach regarding the temps. So I put my case side-panels back on, CPU fans and case fans set to Auto, turned AC off (and trust me it gets quite hot and stuffy here, especially in this part of the world).

Having done all that, fired up Cinebench and started a CPU test. TMPIN02 (which I will assume is my CPU temp, since it is the hottest reading in HWMonitor), topped off at 54C - 55C. I believe its accepted the max temp for AMD FX is around the 60 C mark.

One thing I would like to take note of. I manually set my FSB to 250, in order to get my RAM to 2000Mhz and the CPU/NB and HTLink to 2500Mhz, then asjusted CPU multiplier to get as close as possible to 4.6Ghz, closest is 4.625Ghz.

Now why did I set my RAM to 2000Mhz and the CPU/NB and HTLink to 2500Mhz? One source quoted that at this setting, the memory bandwidth is incredibly high, with results in AIDA64 almost as good as an X79 triple channel setup.

I took this information with a grain of salt at first... but decided to run it. In order to remove clock speed gains and anything else from the equation, I set my clock speed to 4.500Ghz, as FSB 250 allows me to set that clock speed. Then I mixed in a bunch of other setups at 4.495Ghz - 4.505Ghz and even a couple of 4.520Ghz just for the heck of it... the 4.500Ghz with FSB 250 beat them all in Cinebench!!! The other setups gave me scores of 3.66 - 3.68 points... the 4.500Ghz / FSB 250 scored 3.71 points!

Keeping the above in mind, I kept my FSB at 250, RAM at 2000, CPU/NB and HTLink and 2500. Then I simply increased the CPU multiplier. My final result came in at 4.625Ghz at 1.392V (stock voltage).

The next step by increasing the multiplier by one notch is 4.750Ghz, however, this requires a lot more voltage to remain stable, around 1.45V... and the temps at that stage start to become unacceptable for me (at my "realistic approach" I mentioned above)... so I'm settling for 4.625Ghz as my 24/7 overclock.

That's all for now smile.gif I hope you can sort out the issue with the 16.5 multiplier. I'm pretty sure the BIOS update would do the trick. Good luck!

EDIT: Ah forgot one thing. So my RAM is now overclocked to 2000Mhz, no voltage increase, its still at 1.5V. Stock configuration is 1866Mhz 9-10-9-27 1.5V. All I did was bump up my FSB to 250 and went one notch down on the RAM multiplier to give me 2000Mhz.

I already did a Prime95 blend test for 6 hours with these new settings, nothing out of the ordinary, all good. I assume then that my RAM is fine overclocked? Bumping it up to 2030Mhz - 2040Mhz and I start getting BSODs on start-up... I guess I'm on the limit of my RAM at the current CAS Latency and voltage... but I assume it should still run fine?

PHEW, sorry for the long post!!!
