Junking G930, Need new Headphone (not headset)!! :D

Okay so I'm an avid gamer putting that out there. The kind of gamer who has 85K Kills and 34K deaths on black ops. Then 26K kills and 16K Deaths on BF3. I need my decent sound!

I have always been a headset guy, I have always been in audio sound mixing/production so I know headsets are.. well... S***. Best way to put it.

I am selling my G930 headset and plan on buying some 'decent' headphones for gaming. I will buy an external desk mic for my teamspeak etc...

I have a Xonar DX sound card, but I use it to run my 5.1 Setup through my Yamaha Receiver.

I want to spend around $100-$150 on a new pair of headphones. Will be used for gaming. Music occasionally, but naturally gaming. BF3 & BF4.

I will probably use my onboard audio for the new headphones, because it has a better Headphone AMP then my Xonar DX does. the DX headphone amp sucks :L or maybe i'm doing something wrong lol.

So list me some decent headphones for good sound reproduction in games (BF3 has its own 'surround sound').

Or suggest me the best ways to do my setup idk, I just want decent sound quality for once in game.

Receiver: http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/av-receivers-amps/htr/htr-6130_black__u/?mode=model

Motherboard (for sound chipset): http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3907#ov Rev 1.0/1.1

Xonar DX (community coded drivers)

Thankkssss

Xonar DX hp-amp?! DX doesnt have one... And neither does your mobo...
Buy a hp-amp if you are not happy with the headphone performance, DX has great DAC but very high output impedance so its not great for low-impedance headphones (dampening factor, makes bass bloated/etc). Good amp should fix that.
Or you can just use the headphone jack on the receiver...

The OCN recommended audio sticky has nice list of recommended headphones for different kinds of use.

And when you use optical/HDMI/Coaxial/USB, the soundcard doesnt improve audio quality as the receiver takes care of all the audio processing. The only thing DX does in your current setup is to get the 5.1 support via optical (DTS/DDL! encoding). But the problem is that even your GPU can do that when you use HDMI to connect it to the receiver.

Thanks for the info about the amp didn't know that.

although I did know about the HDMI Audio, but my receiver doesn't passthrough audio only video :L.

Alright I will look through that list any good headphone amps you can recommend?

Oh yeah if I ran it through the headphone out on my receiver, while I have the receiver running on optical, would it be the best sound quality?

i was in the same spot as you realy wanting something good, i did my research for about a month and puled the trigger on an sennheiser hd 558. I had extremely high expectations and i had no idea how it sounded just been reading how it sounded and i was not disappointed. never heard something like this before. what you want is a headphone with a big soundstage you should look into is : audio technica , beyerdynamic , AKG and Sennheiser. i recommend you checking out this forum it helped me : Headphones

The sticky thread also has headphone amp recommendations, Schiit Magni and O2.
If you know how to solder: O2 DIY kit + enclosure + front panel + knob.

Im not sure how good the receivers headphone output is, meaning that how high impedance headphones does it support and what is its output impedance.

For all around performance I would suggest the ATH-M50's. They are currently $159, but they are most highly recommended headphones out there for your price range. They are very well balanced sound wise and you do not really need an Amp to run them.

I had a pair before I bought my Ultrasone Pro 900s and I have to say I still miss them.

Here are reviews for the ATH-M50's from Head-Fi

Oh hey my Pro 900s scored pretty well. biggrin.gif

I agree with you on sound stage. He is probably going to have to spend some more to get exactly what he wants though.
