[Build Log] Green-Zilla, 900D, Quad Lightnings, 5x1 Eyefinity! - Page 15

Ok, so here's what's going down. Traded my 780s for quad 7970 Lightnings w/ blocks. Here me out before the onslaught of outrage and bantering please tongue.gif. Don't like the Korean monitors in portrait due to the thick bezels. Wanted to upgrade to a bigger resolution and I had wanted to do 5x1 Eyefinity at the beginning of this year but the screen tearing was the deal breaker. Now that the MST Hubs are out its more plausible. Sadly, Club 3d was the only supplier and they actually didn't think about US consumers wanting these. The only sellers that would ship to the US had some outrageous shipping rates. Luckily I found Accell sells the exact same Device (both in standard and mini). Got one off amazon for ~$120 (about $50 cheaper then getting it from the UK).

The Lightnings have four mini dp; once all five monitors are up and running, I'll have two in the card and three via the Accell MST Hub. This change also brings up the opportunity for me to rebuild my cheapo desk. I got the blueprint figured out and just spend about $40 on a sheet of birchwood plywood and some edge veneer trim. I'll be reusing the hardware from the desk. My 900D will go under the desk since five Dells will definitely leave no room for it sitting on the desk.

The power consumption of the Lightnings worried me and the prev owner suggested something higher then the Enermax 1350w to be on the safe side. So I scored a nice deal on a used ST1500. This unfortunately will not work with the GTX 360 down there. Its already squeezed in between the Enermax and its no way gonna fit with the huge ST1500. So that is going and I have a used GTX 240 I scored for a sweet deal on ebay incoming.

Had plans to get my desk project going today but the rains have postponed that for now. For now here's what I have so far:

-Four MSI 7970 Lightnings w/ EK blocks (shipped)
-Accell MST Hub (shipped)
-HP displayport cables x5 (ordered)
-BI GTX 240 (shipped)
-Silverstone ST1500 (shipped).
-Dell U2412M x2 (one ordered, searching for one more)

After the dust settles, Only expenditures I'll have (if I shop carefully) is just for the desk rebuild and the MST hub. Wife wasn't too happy but at least I'm not spending a lot of extra money. Will make a sweet B-Day present for me biggrin.gif. Call it a downgrade or a sidegrade, whatever, but I've been tempted by 5x1 Eyefinity ever since I saw this build:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Funny how its the same gpu but no ways I was looking to facsimile this build redface.gif

here's something to keep you folks busy:

They have EK blocks (four of them, lightning EOL, can't find them anymore), two EK bridges, and cash. Cash should help w/ the two other monitors i need. Deal is going smoothly so far. The chap is a pleasure to work with and just waiting on delivery and then shipping the 780s.

Yeah, its crazy, things are spiraling out of control as usual when I make a change. One thing leads to another and another. I'm already changing my loop to accommodate the larger psu I had to change to rolleyes.gif. Desk needs to be rebuilt to accommodate the weight of two more Dells. Should hold up the rig but the limitations of the displayport cables means i only have 2m of reach on each one. Hence I can't keep the case on one side. Its going right under the desk below the screens. Good thing I planned for this and i made my new revised desk wider. here's some madz paint skills (or lack there of) of what I have biggrin.gif

Btw, I wills bes runnings mores pixels thens yous son tongue.gif (6000x1920), 11.05M vs 11.5M biggrin.gif. I've seen some quad 7970 setups with this so I'm sure I can pull it off. Slightly under 1600 Surround/Eyefinity though smile.gif. I noticed a few members running 1600 Eyefinity with one 290X (eek.gif), bawls tbh tongue.gif

edit: my isp is crapping out (probably because of the weather). No pics uploading mad.gif

I kow it's more resolution... but you have been saying bad things about the bezel... but aren't sacrificing 96hz with 7680x1440 with 2 bezel breaks in your perpherial vision for 60hz, 6000x1920 (Strange aspect ratio) and less juice on the gpu with 4 bezel breaks? wink.gif

More like complaints, which is natural if you're not happy with something. I've been running the Dells for a few months now and the bezels eventually go out of sight and out of mind wink.gif. I can stand a few more. Heck, I ended up getting used to the Asus ips ones. The Korean one's, its just way to thick for the bottom bezel. For you Landscape guys, hey no problem. But for us few Portrait guys, its a big deal. It becomes a major eyesore.

edit:

Trying to figure out if I should curve all five screens on the corner keeping the "L" shape of the desk or doing a simple rectangular shape desk w/ all five screens some what lined up w/ a slight bow inwards? The later would be simpler to build but the former will get me more desk space. Hmmmmmm..........I've a few pics of mainly the lined w/ slight bow in but the curve setup will give me more distance from the monitors. I've only heard one complain in 5x1 and 3x2 Eyefinity, that is a tad too big resolution for sitting too close, so I'm leaning on the L w/ the curve to push the screens a bit back.

Got a thread going to inform folks on the Accell MST Hub and a guy is gonna run 3x2 1080. That would be awesome biggrin.gif. Pacing fix shouldn't be long now seeing how great the 290X has improved upon this.

Solitaire ftw!

Skipped on 290X since the reference ones only have one dp. Not sure if you can daisy chain two MST Hubs but these guys were readily available and I got some extra funds to get two more screens. My paint diagram makes no sense only to me tongue.gif. If the rains let off by this weekend, might get started then.

4th dell found and ordered at hardforum.com. Still on the hunt for #5 smile.gif.

Any suggestions for a tower roller? This one is nice but not wide enough for the 900D. Need something low profile since I only have about 2" of clearance from the case to the desk. Might get creative and diy one smile.gif
