Hitachi Deskstar 7K4000 4TB or Seagate HDD.15 4TB?

Hi all,
i'm using right now a single WD Caviar Green 2TB for my storage, it's getting full and right now i have only 100GB of free space so i want to upgrade and get a new HDD to transfer some stuff.
I need a new HD but i'm not sure between these two what to buy, the two things i'm looking for in my new hdd is silence and reliability.
There is also a third option, which is a caviar red 3TB but i'm worried i could use all the space in a few months frown.gif
How good are these 4TB hard disks?

thanks

If I were you, Seagate all the way.

Fast, quiet, reliable, and usually cheaper than the competing options. Don't let the OCN Seagate hate bandwagon get you.

The 7200.14s provided unrivaled performance, very close to that of the WD VelociRaptors.

Obligatory note - no HDD can guarantee 100% reliability. If you have a good backup system, reliability is less of a concern smile.gif. Losing 4TB to a single drive failure would be fairly upsetting!

The Seagate drive is likely to be a little quieter than the Hitachi, as the Seagate drive is a 5900rpm one while the Hitachi is 7200rpm - if you want performance, the Hitachi will likely be slightly better, but noisier. Both are good drives though.

Depends.

ST4000DX000: 7200RPM
ST4000DM000: 5900RPM

The DX will be faster than the Hitachi.

The ST4000DX000 is an older Barracuda XT, not a (fairly new it seems) HDD.15. Depends if the OP has access to the XT as well as the HDD.15, I guess smile.gif.

Also, why can't these companies make their websites better? Seagate's site is terrible!

I can't find ST4000DX000 online so i guess is not an option, the hitachi anyway is slightly more expensive (170 euro vs 145 euro).
If i buy one 4TB hd i will probably add another one in raid 1 later to get rid of my caviar green (i will use it as an external hd).

True!

Also, found this.

http://www.rwlabs.com/article.php?cat=&id=810&pagenumber=1

Basically, it is a drive made to compete with the WD Greens, and it literally smashes them. Seems to beat the DeskStar in a handful of occasions, too, despite the inferior rotational speed.
