an attempt for a noob OC'ing guide

I'm pasting in my "draft" attempt for a noobs guide to OC'ing... its geared more to amd, but I think its applicable to intel too... comment is invited... I'm trying to make this as simple as possible and explain stuff in "noob" language as much as possible... also its not meant for internet use...but more for my friends and clients, hence the lack of screen shots...I'm also trying to keep it down to two printed pages...maybe 3 tops... anyway here it is:

There are hundreds of Overclocking guides out there for all sorts of cpu’s, but, I’ve found very few that focus on the very basic information with an explanation. That is my goal here. This is primarily about the 8350 FX cpu paired with a Asus Sabertooth 990fxR2 main board but it is applicable to any unlocked cpu. Is this the final draft, no, I invite anyone with good basic information that I’ve forgotten or have wrong on here to please contact me at smdp1@live.com and tell me or post it here. I am NOT an “expert” overclocker, however I do have lots of experience with AMD chips and some with Intel.
Before you start overclocking you will need to read the manual for your particular motherboard, but for most motherboards you can put them in “manual” mode and thus adjust any particular aspect of your motherboard, but for this basic guide we will focus on the ones that are the easiest and most successful ways to overclock, the core voltage, multiplier, and fsb speed.

First things first go to the advanced menu or wherever your motherboards OC’ing menus are located… turn off turbo core and all other fancy power saving features in advanced tab/cpu options…this can help with stability and to prevent over voltage from a motherboard trying to kick in the turbo core when it shouldn’t

The basics: Three things to keep in mind about overclocking

1. Multiplier: Before you go fooling around with the core voltage you should simply try to turn up the speed. Yes it can be that simple… on my cpu I was able to get 4.4 ghz on stock voltage Because the fx line is unlocked you can just adjust the multiplier in the bios… One thing to note is that in some motherboards, including the sabertooth 990fx R2, the bios will automatically up the cpu voltage above stock if you do not manually set it to 1.3375 (stock for 8350fx) or whatever is stock for your cpu…also it’s a good idea to set the cpu northbridge voltage to 1.175 (again stock for 8350fx) or whatever is stock for your cpu. Now after you adjust this, it’s a good idea boot up and test…. We will cover testing later in this guide so flip ahead and read how to test for stability.

2. Core Voltage, also referred to as Vcore: Ok, so maybe you want to go beyond what you can get at stock voltage…maybe you tried to boot and got a blue screen for your overclock… well cpu’s are a lot like engines… they need to be fed more to do more. So if you want to stabilize an overclock that gave you a blue screen first try and you haven’t already pushed the vcore to the max then this is where to go. Stock Vcore is 1.3375 for 8350fx and normal Vcore for turbo is around 1.39… which is where I usually go next…. At 1.39 vcore on my cpu I was able to get 4.6ghz stable… at this point I should mention that increasing vcore will increase heat… a lot… so if you are increasing vcore you should have better than stock cooling…I will cover this more later…but please read it before you increase the vcore. Also if I were you, even with great cooling I wouldn’t go over 1.55 if you want to keep your cpu… at 1.55 I get 5 ghz stable btw.

3. FSB speed… one other way to overclock your cpu is adjusting your FSB, ok, now if you adjust this you will be turning up the speed on your ram, HT and CPU northbridge so you can cause blue screens other ways besides unstable cpu, so if you choose this method….it gets infinitely more complicated. But if you insist.. here is some basic things to keep in mind…. Turn up the memory voltage by .05 and turn up your cpu northbridge a couple notches just to help maintain their stability you can usually turn them up more, but most cases it won’t help with stability any more when overclocking the cpu. I can set my FSB to 220mhz (stock is 200) without any implications on my system…that gets me a 4.4 ghz overclock. To go over that I have to turn down the speeds on my ram, Hyper Transport, and CPU northbridge to keep them from going unstable. I have used up to 250mhz

Stability Testing: Before you test for stability you should make sure you have enough cooling… you should know that more than anything else testing for stability will generate heat… it will push your cpu to the absolute limit. Power supply could also be a problem.. you should have at least a 750 watt power supply to maintain a good supply. Some recommend using intel burn test… others prime 95 and there are other tests as well, but we’ll stick to those two.

Intel burn test: Google Intel burn test and download the latest version… once you have that you should also lookup a temp monitor, coretemp is a good one to use… install and run the temp monitoring app and then run intel burn test with the standard test… you should watch temps closely and if they get over 61C at any time stop the test and turn down your overclock/vcore and try again or upgrade your cooling. Now if temps are good then let the test run and see the results… if all is well… run it again with the “times to run” set to 20 instead of 10… if it is still all good, try running prime 95

Prime 95, Google Prime 95 and download the latest version of it… install it and be sure to tell it you just want to stress test your cpu and run the standard stress test… again, watch the temps and if if it gets over 61C stop it immediately. Let this run for at least 10 mins…. Some say overnight….if you need absolute stability and your temps are good then sure if you want to leave it running…at your own risk.

Cooling: This can’t be stressed enough. STOCK COOLING ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH!! Stock cooling is barely good enough for stock speeds..honestly. I strongly suggest getting some basic water cooling or some serious air cooling. Corsair H80 is a good place to start for water cooling, but for serious increases in voltage, you will need a custom loop.

Well there you have it… a draft for a short guide to OC’ing… tell me what you think and what I did wrong.

Those are great... and I did see a couple thing I forgot to add ... which I expected since I wrote it in about 5 mins... but I am trying for a condensed version... short and to the point for people who are familiar with pc's and already know the basics, but are new to OC'ing... I've got several friends and clients who are PC savy, but are complete noobs when it comes to OC'ing and the over abundance of info leaves them scared. I should add more detail about what those terms are and names that they are known by on other systems and I'll do that when I have some time. Thanks for the pdf's great info in them!thumb.gif
