Unable to detect hard drive

Thread Starter
So I ended up dropping my hard drive inside my case(it only fell like 2-3 inches) and now my system cannot detect the drive. Switched the sata and power cable to make sure they weren't faulty and that didn't work. When I shake the drive, I hear something loose near the connection area. Am I screwed or is it possible to fix or recover data from it?

It is an old Seagate 400gb drive

If the disc isn't damaged you could take it in to pull the data. Think of the HDD as an old record player, I believe the needle must've come loose, causing the HDD to no longer read.

Got any idea on the price range to do that?

It can vary, greatly. It all comes down to how badly you want your information recovered. The average price can be anywhere from $300-$1,000+. A company I've heard of that does data recovery is Kroll Ontrack. I'm not sure what their prices are, but you could give them a call and see what they think. The problem could easily be something different than what I suggested.
