Question about Ancient Processors

Hey guys, my little cousin has a hand-me-down old Dell with an E6550 and 4gigz ddr2 ram at 800mhz. Now a friend of mine can give me a free, similarly old dell work station that they are tossing at his job. I'm not sure of the exact processor, but I've narrowed it down to the Xeon 5000 series. The lowest chip in that category is the 5030. Assuming that's the chip in the work station, what I want to know, would it even be worth replacing his current PC with this work station. I know it's cheap to build budget systems, but I'd just like to know would there be any benefit in this, or would it actually hurt his performance.

The reason I ask is, the e6550 is 2.33 ghz 1333 fsb and the ram is 800mhz as I stated before. The 5030 (assuming that's even the chip) is 2.66ghz, 667 fsb, 667mhz ram, but I believe there's like 14 gigs of it. It also has hyperthreading, though I don't know how much that'll make a difference on such an old processor. With the difference between the 1333 and the 667 fsb be problem considering the 5030 is clocked higher. Will the slower ram hurt him. Oh and I should point out the primary focus of the pc is gaming. He actually games well enough at lower resolutions on the pc he has now since there is a 7770 in it. Speaking strictly on the processor though, will there be any change one way or the other with the swap?

He might see a change with the faster speed. I believe his processor may actually be bottlenecking (halting performace) on his GPU, so he should definitely see some of a difference if that's the case . The Hyperthreading will help, old or not.

Thanks for the reply, I'm thinking I'll just pick up the Work Station. Even if it doesn't offer much in the way of a performance boost, I can't imagine it hurting, unless someone can enlighten me.

Here is a comparison link on the two processors. thumb.gif

It'll actually help, with the hyperthreading (simply stated) the CPU will actually act like it has more cores, causing performance to increase.
