EDIT: the article is about Titanfall, but this is relevant to both XBone and PS4 in general.

welp. my guess is the CPU's are to blame. the WiiU, Xbone and PS4 respectively sport GPU's on par with a 6670, 7790 and 7870. more than enough for 1080p and good frame rates with direct to metal coding. The CPU in the more expensive consoles however is not fit for even a laptop. The Wii U while having an older single core chip still has a desktop quality cpu. i think this is why only Wii U games were shown and playable running in full 1080p and 60fps. The PS4 did not use a PC under the curtain like the Xbone, but unlike the Xbone games shown nothing on PS4 ran smooth at all. everything was 30fps and lower, not even steady.

I was excited about next gen consoles for the sheer fact that PC games would be held back less.

This seems to be false. For the most part. When I heard PC's where running demos at E3.... I knew something was up. HOPEFULLY just early development.

Most of the time when making a game you write the code, then optimize. Graphics comes last, that means poly count optimizations, new techniques such as dynamic tesselation and stuff get added in after the fact to allow for more FPS. Of course games 6 months from release are going to run less than stellar. That's when the graphics are finally coming together.

we're still going to get better DX11 and multi threading optimized code(i hope).

I think we are having a huge problem with game studios still wanting to release for PS3 and 360 and not going all out on the next gen consoles.

I'm pretty disappointed myself. GTA5 was a huge culprit of this as well and it's just going to end up yet another game targeted for 360 with a 3 core CPU.

It'll take some time for developers to really make the most out of the new consoles, but game developers seem really, really tepid about embracing the next gen of consoles to their fullest and instead look like they want to hang back and focus older consoles.

I realize Titanfall isn't targeted for 360 or PS3 but it sure seems like they're holding back on texture resolution in order to avoid memory or bandwidth problems. I sure hope this isn't a sign of XDone's DDR3 holding PS4's GDDR5 back.

i'm not aware of many games this has held true for besides a few MMORPG's, and certainly no console games(most look and run worse on release actually).

Titanfall is on the source engine and they can't get it running well. Dead Rising 3 dipped into the 10's of FPS often and every PS4 title visibly dipped below 30. the only common link would be the CPU. Whatever is going on they'd all better sort it out. It is ridiculous on many levels that the only console giving you games in 1080p and at 60 fps is the WiiU. Even the splinter cell port looked smoother on it.

I'm a selfish person and as such I wish they pull the resolution and the frame rate of the consoles as far down as it can go. 360p and 20fps for all I care.

Because for me it means better looking games with more AI, physics, bigger environments etc. that with a proper PC can be run at whatever resolution at a good frame rate.
