Great Posts by BrianK and the Duke--great to have the technical aspects revealed and to have links to corraborating data.

Thanks for putting in the effort on this interesting and highly opinionated topic.

Why not.

I am no authority and all too often I read posts that smack of authority when it is really just someone regurgitating something they half-read and even less understood.

Glad you are on the Forum BrianK. Your knowledge might even rub off on me--eventually.

Wondering if anyone knows about the differences between first generation Raptors and 2nd Gen Raptors...What is the start date for Gen2? How can one determine what a drive is by the labelling or whatever.

I have a feeling I have one old Raptor and 3 new ones in a RAID10 array--which might be making it a little slow.

From Anandtech
Quote:
To the left of the data and power connectors is a four pin jumper block. This jumper block will determine whether the drive operates in Serial ATA/150 or Serial ATAII/300 mode. Two pins are enabled by default, meaning the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ships and will operate in SATA/150 mode. In order for the drive to operate in Serial ATAII/300 mode, the jumper must be removed. Enabling SATAII/300 is recommended if you have a compatible motherboard that fully supports SATA II/300 operations. While this feature was advantageous for burst transfer rates in our synthetic benchmarks, overall we did not see any real improvement in our real world benchmarks.

Cyberdruid, did you ever do the testing of the different types of drives in raid0? I'm interested in seeing the results even though I got a pair of 7200.10's myself. Just for future upgrade references.

Have not had time--a rig died today and I had to mess around setting up a temp to transfer the data.

But it is on the way...

I gave my vote to the Cudas raid0 mostly because of the price/Gb. From the benches I've seen most of the recent generation 7200rpm disks in Raid0 are equal or better to the "old" raptors that didn't support NCQ. They supported TCQ which, without entering in tech details, was not supported by any desktop chipset, TCQ was a SCSI server thing.

The 150 raptors in are better than the old 36 and 74Gb ones. The difference between a raptor 150 and a 7200.10 is quite important, but if e put them in raid0 the distance shrinks. There must be a scaling issue with the raptors and I have a hunch that this is because of the low quality implementation of raid sata in nowadays chipsets. I'm curious how would they fare on a high-end sata controller.
