Test Loop Got Hot after an hour

I don't have all my components yet, but I was eager to see my pumps in action, so i set up a loop with just two fittings in it and hooked up my pumps. I filled it with tap water since it wasnt actually being used to cool anything, and jump started my PSU. I thought it was kind of odd that my reservoir was filled with bubbles, but since this is my first time I figured the bubblies would work themselves out. Here is the loop:



After leaving it sit for an hour, I came back to it, and the fittings were HOT. I didnt have a means to measure the temperature, but I wouldn't have wanted to hold them in my hands for more than a few seconds. The water was also still bubbly and I kinda feel like it was brownish. Maybe I am making things up because I am paranoid and it was just discolored slightly, but heres a picture.



Is this normal? Or does any one have any clue whats wrong? Could it be because I have tap water? Or maybe because its using a 1200W PSU with only two D5 pumps? The fittings were noticeably hotter than the pumps also. I kinda feel paranoid right now. Help?

Given you have no other sources of heat the heat must be coming from the pump motors. IF you didnt have a rad and fans in the test loop then that would explain the heat build up.

Tap water not a good idea. Most first world countries have 3rd world water supplies (exaggeration) and there could be anything in it so it probably is a little discoloured.

Flush out with Distilled water otherwise your loop will eventually get a lot of gunk in it. Make sure give you Rad a good shake with water in it to get rid of the flux and other bits left over from the manufacturing process.

Water pumps produce more heat in high flow / low restriction conditions.
Two D5's running at full speed with no restriction produce about 40 watts of heat. Its lucky the tubing didn't soften from the heat and pop off the fittings.

Those D5's are especially bad without cooling. They put out 24W each. Combined that's essentially the equivalent of running an undervolted 3570 full tilt without cooling, in terms of heat build up.

As the other guys have said - the pumps put out quite a bit of heat, especially when they are running with no load (electric motors use more power when running at higher RPM). If you had no active cooling there is no wonder that the loop got hot.

The water probably stayed bubbly due to the extremely high flow rate in the res - the turbulence on the surface would have been enough to create bubbles.

The brownish tint may be something to do with the water or it may be to do with the fact that you have everything on a brown table....

Try putting a white piece of paper under the res and then see what colour the water appears. Either way tap water is a bad idea - get some distilled water from the grocery store and use that instead.
