Strange Lapping results.

Thread Starter
I just lapped my cpu/heatsink yesterday and was a bit stumped by my temps. Before I would run about 32* c idle and 41*C load. Now I run 34* C Idle and 38 Load. I think its a bit odd, that Now that I have lapped it, my idle temps are higher, and my load temps are lower. Any Ideas as to why this is reacting that way?

What about AS5? You have to use MUCH less after lapping (If you did it properly)

What grits did you do it with?

Two things to try... first, make sure you are using enough but not too much TIM. For AS5 or Ceramique, most heat sinks use the quantity equivalent to about the size of a grain of rice or smaller. Too much will elevate temps.

Secondly, make sure you allow a good 48 hours to burn in. There is always some settling invovled.

A: You made it rougher
B: You didn't lap it on a piece of glass
C: You used too much AS5

Used a piece of glass, its pretty shiny, not perfect like alot of the ones I have seen on here, but enough I can see myself in it, went all the way down to 2000 grit. So I probably put too much AS5 on, I didnt know you needed to use less after lapping, my mistake. thanks guys!

You didn't lap it flat. Trust me. What did you use to check it was actually flat? I'm guessing nothing right, you just assumed because it was shiny it was flat. Had this problem with temps before, what you have more than likely done is lap it at an angle or rocked it on the sand paper.

The easiest thing to use to check if it is level is a machinist's ruler, hold it perpendicular on the lapped surface and hold it up to the light, if you can see light through it, then it is not flat. Also I'd note the spreading pattern of the AS5 when you remove the HS, this will give you a better indication as to how uneven it is. Check to see if one side of the CPU IHS has the AS5 spread out more than the other.

That is pretty idle, and some darn good temps.
