Overclocking help?

Thread Starter
Ok here's the latest, with my stock CPU (2000MHz) i ran FEAR at this particular setting and tested the average FPS with fraps, i got 14,12,13,15 and 16.

I overclocked the CPU from 2000MHz to 2500MHz with the RAM overclocked from 200MHz to 208MHz, i cant really feel a huge a difference with fraps i just ran two tests in the same server as before and got an average of 17,16,17 so yea a little increase but an extra quarter of the CPU from original (an extra 500MHz) and it has raised the FPS by like 2-3 lol! crap!!

Its stable by the way!

Ok my main question is i see my HT link i put it on 800 because im OCing, is this right??
I mean coz if i left it at 1GHz it would be at stock 1ghz (5) X 200 = 1GHz so i change it to 800 (4) and my FSB is 250 so 4 X 250 = 1GHz which is what i want it to be, anything over 1GHz messes it up right?
Now i might overclock a little more but ill have to put it to 600 (3) and there will be a huge gap, will this matter?

If you know what i mean??

You have your ht at the right place....And yes if you get above the ht of 1080 then you may need to lower it to x3...

ahh i didnt know it was 1080, i thought it was 1000, ok thanks!

Erm does it alter performance, because if i go over 255 on a X4 then i will have to go to X3 then 256 X 3 = 768 and thats not good because its no where near 1080, right?

What I have heard from the AMD boyz is that you want to keep the HT slack--so you are in there at 800. But what I found (since I know nothing and have to experiment to discover everything) is that running my HT at 1100 makes my 3DMark06 score higher--which in theory means COing the HT yields extra performance. Not sure why or how but this seems to be the case for me.

I have been benching for several hours this morning and last night and theday before and the day before that--becasue i am not an AMD guru and don't understand why it should make a difference if you get to the CPU frequency with a 5X multi or a 10X multi...but it does.

On the NF3 Gigabyte board and on the NF4 DFI board (which have similar BIOS layout) I found that using 7X multi got me a higher stable OC than 8X or 10X or 5X. The DFI board handles a high FSB freq well so I really push that with a low RAM divider.

I am not afraid to over volt my stuff so if you are ignore the following. When you have OCed to the point where it POSTS but does not boot into Windows back down a notch and tickle the Vcore up a bit--and usually it well Boot stable at a higher freq than you thought possible. Then inch up the FSB. When it hangs again tickle the Vcore a bit more. ABout .2 of a volt is all I ever overvolt which is a lot actually. So you have to have good cooling.

Now when the HT goes past 1100 I step up the multi and lower the FSB accordingly (use a calculator to find the desire FSB for the multi) unfortunately what usually happens is the OC is no longer stable at the higher multi/lower FSB. More overvolting will not help.

So that's where I have gotten-- on the X2 on the DFI: 7 X 375, HT 1125, RAM at 238 (It can run at 277 easy--but for some reason when I run slower with tighter timings it produces better benchmark scores) and Vcore at 1.45

I have the LDT (HT) voltage trimmed up as well as the Chipset and RAM. The RAM I am using does not like more than 2.7 to run at DDR633 (insane!) but the chipset needs a bit of juice to handle the High FSB and the HT needs some support too--too much voiltage actually produces an instability I found--so there is a happy medium you need to find for the gear at hand.

Hope that helps!

You've got so much rep CyberDruid you probably don't need any more but I thought that post was well worth some

If your overclocking the CPU, you shouldn't really be testing it with games - your only going to get a minimal increase, and if your looking for an increase in FPS you'd be better overclocking your graphics card.

I advise you download and run SuperPi - this will show a major difference, and should make you happy

THanks--I have all the stress tests we commonly use here--but I am looking for a maximum 3DMark06 score--not a stable OC LOL. Thanks!

But Orthos seems to be the deal just now--that and Folding will show an instability right away. This I know from experience--if it Folds flawlessly it's stable enough IMO.

Yep

Hopefully I can start folding again when I get my new system up and running - a mag I suscribe to says that if you fold 1 WU for them you get entered into a prize draw for a X1950XTX so I might as well

And then if I do move teams I've only got 44 points (kept corrupting my WUs by overclocking) so it doesn't matter too much

Orthos is a great program - easy to use but just as good as Prime95

NICE! post cd !

cleared up loads of stuff, ok so im OCing now, weirdly, i think its just my motherboard but when i go high it still loads into windows but doesnt actually overclock unless i enter bios and F10 and save and exit then load into windows and boom! its overclocked !

But ever time i have to enter bios and do that, even if i dont touch anything, i just save and exit and its overclocked! weird eh!

Anyway thanks!!

Its probably got some sort of backup system where it remembers your last stable settings and sets them automatically

Good luck with getting higher
