Second Drive Recommendation

Thread Starter
I currently have an m4 256GB ssd as my only drive in my gaming rig and it seemed to fill up quite fast. So, I decided to go with a standard hdd instead of an ssd for the mass storage of games that I use less. I know there are many options out there but which are the most trusted brands and models and which would you guys recommend? Also, I would like to have a drive between the size of 2-3TB. Thanks in advance!

Western Digital is always a good brand. Take a look at their stuff, I think you'll be happy with them.

I run many of my games off of a WD Blue WD10EZEX 1TB and honestly it's only slightly slower than running off an SSD. I highly recommend them, if you think that 1TB will suffice. You could always grab two and put them in a RAID0 array for sequential speeds near the 400MBs mark, and at $65 a piece ($50-55 on sale), it's a very cost effective way to get 2TB of extremely fast storage. Check out Seans recent excellent thread with benches.

I would not spend the extra for a Black (slower/noisier) or RE (the data is not critical), and the Red/Green are not good for anything more than storage really. I like the VelociRaptor 1TB, especially in RAID0, but they simply aren't worth the exorbitant cost. Hybrid drives are currently not worth anything, but I am eagerly awaiting the upcoming refresh of the WD Black which has 24GB NAND in a 5mm thick total package!

WD Blue is faster than WD Black? Source?

HDTune Pro 5.0 Graph of one of my WD Blue 1TB WD10EZEX HDD's, although this was done (intentionally) when the drive was ~21% fragmented and 38% Full. After a full defrag with O&O Professional (first a "space" complete defrag, then a "Last Accessed" defrag + Optimization), then a reboot, the speeds increased to: 204.2MB/sec Max 166.9MB/sec Avg 112.4MB/sec Min And the Access Time decreased to 14.2ms. I think I will get two of the WD blue drives for now. I am not sure about how to set up or even if I can set them up in raid0 as secondary drives but I am sure in that section I will find the answers. Thanks for the info!
