Best Sub-$300 monitor?

Thread Starter
$200 is quite a bit high for what I am expecting to pay frankly, I would rather stay around 150 or less, and only do up to 200 if it's really a huge leap up (as in totally noticeable jump in screen quality...).

1080, for gaming/general usage. The 120hz weird effect, looks really weird to me, as I understand you don't get that in games (but won't I still get it with youtube videos or watching HD content or movies online?), but the game I play, SC2, averages around 50 FPS anyways on a 5ghz i7 when streaming so I'm not really worried about 120hz.

I don't mind modding (removing anti-glare, bezel, etc sort of stuff), if that's necessary to make a monitor better. I could care less about what ports it has, if it has HDMI or whatever, adaptors are super cheap and I have a bunch and the monitor's always come with some...

I have a U2312HM right now, it was $149 Microcenter Open Box, but there's a dead pixel on it, it's really bad, so I'm going to exchange it. I've had no problem with the monitor, watched a few TV shows and movies and it looks great (I mean it's obviously a bit small for watching movies from across your bed, but it's definitely way better than the Vizio e260mv 26" in screen quality). This monitor is meant for being a monitor on a desk for a computer system (gaming, general usage), I'm just currently in the process of moving and building a computer (gotta paint the whole house, and waiting on a few more parts, so no hurry to assemble the computer), I was only watching a few movies/shows from the bed to see how it compared to the vizio.

I have no complaints about the monitor, looks great. I'm not sure about the whole matte vs gloss thing, I mean when I look at glossy screens, even when there's a huge reflection from the lights in the store, I don't even notice unless I look for them, and then 2 seconds later I don't notice them again until I look for them again. But whatever, I'll be using the screen for long sessions so gloss might be too straining.

Microcenter, however, is out of stock. All 3 of them in the DC area are out of stock, of both open box and normal u2312hm's. So I guess I have an opportunity here to see if another monitor is better. If the u2312hm is still the best I'll just wait, if not, I'm all ears. It seems to me that the larger u2412hm is worse in value or screen quality in some ways? I mean I don't exactly need a larger monitor since it'll be right in my face, the 23" seems large enough coming from a 18" Sanyo DP19640 HDTV 1360x768p.

what about the best sub-$300 monitor? How much better is it than the u2312hm? I don't mind spending more, but it should be of similar value as the u2312hm, it should be noticeably better unless you are going to tell me that the best monitor under 300 is still the u2312hm.

I only want a 1080p monitor, by the way. SC2 cuts off if you go 16:10.

LG's monitors are always a force to be reckoned with. I recommend this monitor. Take a look at it's specs and see what you think. It's on sale from $250 to $200 at the moment, which is a fairly substantial cut.

Edit: Forgot to mention that it was IPS, so it will look like liquid beauty. However, if standard LCD is still your thing, check this one out. I've always been a fan of Asus and that monitor has a great response time.

Why would standard LCD be or not be my thing?

THat monitor is on sale right now for $169, good price, but I can't really find any info or comments on how it compares to the u2312hm.

Haha, I don't know. biggrin.gif

The monitor you're already looking at is an IPS monitor. IPS is a type of LCD that offers better colors and viewing angles. One, drawback is bad response time.

With a non-IPS display, contrast can be increased and response time can be improved. Only now there is a drawback on viewing angles and colors.

It really comes down to personal preference.

Here's a spec comparison on the two.

As I understand, response listed listed is irrelevant due to things that artificially reduce response time. There are sites that test true response times, the u2312hm i think is rated as one of the best monitors of all in terms of true response time (ie a lot of asus monitors I think ranked really poorly). I'm not sure how much response time matters seeing as after a certain point it's so fast you can't tell (right?).

I mean response time is just the time for the pixels to change color (input time is the one that sucks, where it's delay in input, but not sure that's a major issue in modern monitors). As I understand it. The spec page you provided, I don't think it really is useful since manufacturer numbers mean nothing, right?

I don't know why I'd care about viewing angles if this was for a monitor on a computer desk, I mean I'd be looking right at the monitor from close.

Spec are worthless for IPS. A calibrated IPS is amazing and I really recommand it.
The LG model that melodicmetro suggested is a good one.

I see your point there. Since you're getting such a great deal on the Dell, go for it. IPS is worth it in my opinion. If the true response time is good, then you should have no real problems gaming.

Okay, that's straightforward. I wonder what kind of calibration or optimization is necessary..

what about the best sub-$300 monitor? How much better is it than the u2312hm?

I only want a 1080p monitor, by the way. SC2 cuts off if you go 16:10.

You could shoot for this 27" Asus. It's also an IPS, but this one comes with 3D.

As a sidenote, a 2560x1440 display resolution is still 16:9.
